Minnesota Stars Scouting Report
Minnesota (4-0-5, 17 points) enters Tuesday’s U.S. Open Cup match fresh off of a 3-1 third-round upset over current MLS Supperter’s Shield leaders Real Salt Lake at Rio Tinto Stadium on May 29. The Stars were lifted by goals from Kevin Venegas, Neil Hlavaty and Simone Bracalello on their way to becoming only the second team to win at Rio Tinto this year. The Stars are the reigning NASL champions and currently are tied atop the league table with the Puerto Rico Islanders. Forward Amani Walker leads the Stars with three goals in NASL play. In their last NASL outing, the Stars tied the San Antonio Scorpions 0-0 in San Antonio.

History of the Earthquakes-Minnesota Rivalry
While the Earthquakes have never faced Minnesota Stars FC, the clubs’ history with professional soccer in the state dates back to April 24, 1976, when San Jose defeated the Minnesota Kicks 4-2 in the second game of the NASL regular season. From 1976-1981, the Earthquakes had a record of 2-6-0 against the Kicks. On July 14, 2002, the Quakes faced the Minnesota Thunder in an exhibition match. The Quakes won that meeting behind a spectacular volley from Dwayne De Rosario, as well as a goal from Luchi Gonzalez. Former Quakes midfielder and current Stars coach Manny Lagos wore the captain’s armband for the Quakes that game. The Quakes last faced the Thunder on August 4, 2004, in the U.S. Open Cup quarterfinals. After a 2-2 tie at the end of regulation and extra time, the Quakes defeated the Thunder 5-4 on penalty kicks to advance to the semifinals. Buzz Lagos, father of Manny Lagos, coached the Thunder in both of their meetings against the Quakes.
