SAN JOSE, Calif. – Over 35,000 tickets have been sold for the San Jose Earthquakes’ nationally televised match against David Beckham, Robbie Keane, Landon Donovan and the LA Galaxy at Stanford Stadium on June 30 (7 p.m. PT, ESPN2), presented by XFINITY.
The Earthquakes are aiming to set a new club record for single-game attendance at a non-doubleheader match. The current record is 41,028, a mark reached on July 2, 2011 when San Jose hosted the New York Red Bulls in a 2-2 draw at Stanford Stadium. Lower bowl sideline seats and director’s level seats are already sold out, but tickets remain in the upper deck and end zones.
“There are so many intriguing storylines with this match,” said Earthquakes Club President Dave Kaval. “You have one of the best rivalries in the league in the California Clasico, the fireworks extravaganza, an amazing halftime show and we’re honoring the United State Armed Forces. This game is the sporting event of the summer in the Bay Area.”
At the helm of the halftime show is renowned Patrick Roberge Productions, creators of the opening and closing ceremonies for the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. The display will honor members of each of the five branches of the United States Armed Forces as part of a grand Independence Day celebration. In addition to the halftime spectacle, the Earthquakes and BAE Systems donated 700 tickets to troops and their families to attend the match.
For a second consecutive year, the match will also feature a fireworks extravaganza following the final whistle. The sky will light up for 15 minutes with a synchronized show produced by Pyro Spectaculars by Souza, Inc.
Pre-game festivities will include tailgating in all parking lots as well as live entertainment from local band Melted State in the Epicenter Fan Zone. The Epicenter, located next to the track and field stadium at Stanford University, will also feature inflatables, foosball tables, corn hole boards, food trucks, face painting and sign making stations and other amenities for fans to enjoy.
The first round of the California Clasico on May 23 at The Home Depot Center ended in dramatic fashion with San Jose’s Alan Gordon scoring in the fourth minute of stoppage time to cap a 3-2 comeback Earthquakes win. The Earthquakes trailed 2-0 in the 73rd minute before racking up three unanswered goals in the final 15 minutes of the match.
