Recap: Quakes fall 1-0 in preseason friendly vs. Chicago

Justin Morrow vs. FC Dallas

GOLETA, Calif. – The San Jose Earthquakes dropped a 1-0 result against the Chicago Fire during a preseason exhibition at UC Santa Barbara’s Harder Stadium on Saturday.

The match was played in two 40-minute halves, a shortened format agreed upon by both head coaches before kickoff.

Earthquakes forward Chris Wondolowski and defender Justin Morrow made their first preseason appearances after returning from U.S. Men’s National Team camp. The duo started and played 55 minutes. Wondolowski forced Fire goalkeeper Sean Johnson to come up with several saves as San Jose peppered the goal with shots in the first half.

Chicago’s lone goal came on a penalty in the 79th minute from offseason acquisition Jeff Larentowicz. The center midfielder slotted his shot to the left post past third-year goalkeeper David Bingham.

The Earthquakes return to action on Tuesday against the Ventura County Fusion at Oxnard Community College (11 a.m. PT). They will return to the Bay Area after the match and depart again on Friday, this time for Portland where the club will play games against the Timbers, FC Dallas and AIK of Sweden.
