Last Game

Earthquakes 2, Colorado Rapids 1; June 15, 2013; Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colo.

Steven Lenhart and Sam Cronin scored to lead the Earthquakes to a 2-1 win against the Colorado Rapids in interim head coach Mark Watson’s debut. The Earthquakes burst out of the gates to take the lead in the 11th minute. Justin Morrow sent a pass in the air that Alan Gordon nodded forward to his strike partner. Lenhart pulled the ball back and then fired between a pair of defenders from 23 yards out, beating Rapids goalkeeper Clint Irwin to the top shelf. The goal was Lenhart’s first of 2013. Cronin was next to the scoreboard in the 52nd minute. San Jose’s central midfield pairing teamed up to create the chance as Rafael Baca looped a perfectly weighted pass over Colorado’s defense to Cronin on the run. The 2013 AT&T MLS All-Star nominee slotted his shot past Irwin for his first career game-winning goal. Colorado pulled one back in the 67th minute, but couldn’t find an equalizer. Brian Mullan sent a cross into the box and found Nathan Sturgis open at the top of the 6-yard box. Sturgis leapt and headed in his third goal of the season. San Jose held an advantage in possession for the night, including a 57-43 margin in the second half.  The match was also Watson’s first as interim head coach, marking the sixth time an Earthquakes head coach has won his first game on the sidelines. San Jose’s head coaches are 6-1-0 all-time in their first game with the club.

D.C. United Scouting Report

D.C. United (1-11-3, 6 pts.) enters the weekend with the worst record in MLS one year after reaching the Eastern Conference Championship. United hasn’t won since March 9, a 1-0 result against Real Salt Lake in the second week of the regular season. Most recently, they fell 2-1 against Toronto FC at RFK Stadium. Dwayne De Rosario scored his second goal of the season in the 19th minute to give United an early lead, but Toronto FC roared back with a goal from Robert Earnshaw in the 30th minute and then took control thanks to a Daniel Woolard own goal in the 41st. De Rosario and Leonard Pajoy lead United with two goals apiece while Chris Pontius is tops in assists with two.

Last Game vs. D.C. United

Earthquakes 5, D.C. United 3; May 2, 2012; Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif.

Chris Wondolowski and Steven Lenhart each had braces as the Earthquakes powered past D.C. United at home in a midweek match. After falling behind 1-0 on an early goal from Dwayne De Rosario, the Earthquakes exploded for three goals to close out the half. The first came from Lenhart in the 19th minute, a powerful blast from the top of the area to equalize. Next up was a clinical finish from Wondolowski after nifty passes from Simon Dawkins and Tressor Moreno to set the two-time MLS leading scorer up on the doorstep. Justin Morrow capped the first-half onslaught with his first career goal, one timing his shot past goalkeeper Joe Willis at the near post. Wondolowski and Lenhart each added goals in the second half to link their braces. The first was a whipped header from Wondolowski in the 69th minute thanks to a teasing ball sent just over the D.C. United defense by Steven Beitashour. Lenhart closed the Earthquakes’ account in the 74th minute, chesting home a rebound after Marvin Chavez hit the crossbar with a long-range effort. With his two goals on Wednesday, Wondolowski became the fastest player to 10 goals in MLS history in what was his ninth game of the season. The markers were Nos. 50 and 51 in his career. He also moved one ahead of New York Red Bulls forward Thierry Henry in the Budweiser Golden Boot standings. The match marked the first time San Jose scored five goals in a game since the club rejoined MLS in 2008 and set a new Buck Shaw Stadium record.
