Last Game
Earthquakes 2, Chivas USA 0; Aug. 3, 2013; Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif.

Chris Wondolowski scored twice to lead the Earthquakes to a 2-0 win against Chivas USA in front of a sold out crowd of 10,525 at Buck Shaw Stadium. The game was Wondolowski’s first with San Jose since his CONCACAF Gold Cup championship run with the United States Men’s National Team. The reigning Volkswagen MLS Most Valuable Player left his footprint with a goal just before halftime and then sealed the match with another midway through the second half. The Earthquakes’ first tally came in the 45th minute as Steven Beitashour sent a perfectly weighted pass from his defensive half to Victor Bernardez in the area. The Honduran center back leapt and headed a pass across the goal face to Wondolowski for the finish.  Wondolowski doubled his haul in the 87th minute, this time pouncing on a loose ball in the box. Adam Jahn slotted a pass to Shea Salinas on the right side of the area where the speedy winger blasted a shot on target, forcing Chivas USA goalkeeper Dan Kennedy to make a difficult save. However, Wondolowski was first to the rebound off of Kennedy’s hands, chipping in his second strike from close range to up his 2013 goal total to seven.\

Last Game vs. Montreal Impact
Earthquakes 2, Montreal Impact 2; Aug. 3, 2013; Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif.

The Earthquakes rallied from a two-goal deficit to draw the Montreal Impact 2-2. San Jose out-shot the Impact 16-6 and had a 14-1 advantage in corner kicks, but had to settle for a tie with the top team in the East. Midfielder Sam Cronin sparked the comeback with an assist and a stoppage-time equalizer, his first goal of the season and second of his four-year career with the Earthquakes. The Earthquakes controlled the early tempo of the game, but found themselves behind when Impact midfielder Justin Mapp unloaded from 35 yards out in the 34th minute for his first goal of the season. The veteran winger would connect again just two minutes into the second half, getting on the other end of a cross from forward Andrew Wenger for an easy tap-in at the far post. Rookie forward Adam Jahn pulled one back in the 59th with his third goal of the season. Marvin Chavez located Chris Wondolowski at the top of the box, sliding a pass that was quickly redirected to the feet of Cronin. The center mid calmly took a touch and then slipped a through ball on the run to Jahn, who trapped and buried his shot toward the far post. The Earthquakes waited until stoppage time to find their game-tying goal. Walter Martinez sent a ball into the mix that found Wondolowski open with his back to the goal. Wondolowski headed a pass back to Cronin near the edge of the area where the former Wake Forest product took a touch and fired through traffic and past the outstretched arms of goalkeeper Troy Perkins to tie the game.

New Stadium Update

The Earthquakes announced last Monday that due to unforeseen conditions at the stadium site, the team is pushing back the opening date of their new stadium to the second half of the 2014 season. With the change in opening date, the team will play eight games at Buck Shaw Stadium, one game at Stanford Stadium and nine games at the new stadium next season. Season ticket packages will now consist of 18 games, with 17 regular season games and one bonus game. For more information about season tickets for 2014, please contact the Earthquakes Front Office at 408-556-7700. During the demolition phase, the construction team uncovered numerous concrete vaults deep in the ground, used munitions from the FMC factory, steel beams and hundreds of concrete pilings. To drain one of the holes, over 600 tons of rock had to be used.
