The San Jose Earthquakes celebrated a major milestone for its new stadium on Friday with a Foundation Pour Ceremony at the construction site.
Earthquakes season ticket holders, club president Dave Kaval, general manager John Doyle and partners from Devcon Construction attended the ceremony. Doyle and longtime season ticket holder Merryl Zuparko participated by pushing a button to release cement in the area that will turn into the stadium’s locker rooms and front office.
As part of the club’s commitment to keep its closest stakeholders involved in every step of the constructionprocess, select season ticket holders were invited to take part in the momentous event. That list included: Virginia Gelczis, Mitch Diamond, Jennifer Echeverri, Nelson Celada Ned and Merryl Zuparko.
“One thing that is great about the Earthquakes is that we are such a community organization and team,” Kaval said. “Having fans involved in every part of the construction of the stadium, including today, where a fan actually pulled the lever to have the concrete flow is another really unique part of our club and organization.”
The pouring began at 7 a.m. PT today. Over 70 trucks poured 600 yards of foundation using trucks from Central Concrete.
In hopes of continuing fan involvement in the new stadium process, Kaval will host office hours at the construction site once a month. His next office hours are scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 15 from 3-7 p.m. Fans are encouraged to keep tabs on the construction by watching the new stadium webcam at www.sjearthquakes.com/newstadium.
