Last Game

Earthquakes 2, FC Dallas 1; May 10, 2014; Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif.
The Earthquakes played the entire second half down a man, but held on for a 2-1 win against FC Dallas at a sold out Buck Shaw Stadium. Cato scored his first goal of the season in the 25th minute. Jon Busch sent a long pass downfield that Clarence Goodson flicked past the FC Dallas backline and right into the path of Cato. The flying Trinidadian collected the ball and slotted his shot past goalkeeper Raul Fernandez. The assists were milestones for both Goodson and Busch – the first for Goodson in an Earthquakes uniform and the first for Busch in his 14-year MLS career. After Shea Salinas was sent off at the end of the first half for a hard challenge, San Jose organized at the break and came out with a resilient shape that held up for the win. The Earthquakes posted what turned into the game-winning goal in the 73rd minute. Sam Cronin bent a teasing free kick into the mix where FC Dallas substitute David Texeira deflected the ball into the net while trying to shield Chris Wondolowski from the play. FC Dallas pulled one back three minutes later on a spectacular free kick from the top of the box by Brazilian left back Michel. However, the Earthquakes’ defense regrouped and kept three points with a tenacious group effort. Busch ended the night with four saves and faced a total of 20 shots, five of which were on target.

Last Game vs. Seattle Sounders FC
Earthquakes 1, Seattle Sounders FC 0; July 13, 2014; Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif.
Honduran winger Walter Martinez scored his first career MLS goal to lead the San Jose Earthquakes to a 1-0 win against Western Conference rival Seattle Sounders FC in front of a sold-out crowd at Buck Shaw Stadium. The Earthquakes received a stellar effort from their defensive unit, limiting Sounders FC to six total shots and just one on goal. The clean sheet was San Jose’s second of the season, the last coming in a 1-0 win against Seattle on March 23 at Buck Shaw Stadium. After a scoreless first half, Martinez tallied the game’s lone goal three minutes into the final stanza. Steven Lenhart misfired from the top of the box, but Martinez found the ball, cut back and curled a close-range shot into the upper corner for his first goal since signing with San Jose on March 15, 2013. One minute later, Alan Gordon nearly doubled the Earthquakes’ lead after a long throw-in from Dan Gargan and a flicked header from Lenhart found the target man open in front of the goal. Gordon took a volleyed shot, but it went high of the target. Lenhart also had a golden opportunity to put San Jose in front by two, but his one-on-one with Sounders FC goalkeeper Andrew Weber was blocked.
