SAN JOSE, Calif. – Earthquakes forward Tommy Thompson will remain in San Jose for upcoming road matches against the Portland Timbers and Vancouver Whitecaps FC, U.S. Soccer announced on Monday.
Thompson and Orlando City SC defender Tyler Turner were replaced with Columbus Crew midfielder Romain Gall and Chivas de Guadalajara defender Luis Martir as the United States U-20s departed for Argentina on Monday for a 10-day camp. The U-20s will train in Buenos Aires and play friendlies against Racing Club Reserves, Defensa y Justicia Reserves and the Argentina U-20s.
San Jose's 19-year-old forward has started three-straight games for the Earthquakes. He became the second-youngest player in club history to start a match when he took the field against Seattle Sounders FC in a 1-1 draw at CenturyLink Field on Aug. 20. He followed that performance with 90-minute shifts against the Philadelphia Union and Real Salt Lake on Aug. 20 and Aug. 30, respectively. Thompson signed as the club's first Homegrown Player on Jan. 22, 2014.
The Earthquakes begin their Pacific Northwest road trip on Sunday against the Portland Timbers (2 p.m. PT / ESPN2) at Providence Park. They'll head straight to Vancouver after the match to take on Whitecaps FC on Wednesday, Sept. 10 (7 p.m. PT / CSN Plus).
