The San Jose Earthquakes announced today that midfielder JJ Koval is on a two-week training stint with Portuguese first division side S.L. Benfica.
Koval, 22, has made 22 MLS appearances since his first round selection (no. 9 overall) by the Earthquakes in the 2014 SuperDraft. The Stanford graduate has also started nine games in his MLS campaign, including CONCACAF Champions League group matches.
S.L. Benfica currently tops the Primeira Liga by six points - most recently defeating Guimaraes 3-0 on January 10. Benfica holds a 13-1-2 record this season with their next match against Maritamo on January 18.
