SAN JOSE, Calif. – The San Jose Earthquakes announced today that they have renewed both their English language and Spanish language radio partnerships. Quakes games will air on 1590 KLIV in English and KZSF “La Kaliente” in Spanish for the fifth straight year.
“We feel strongly about having our games on the radio in addition to television to give our fans a complete broadcast package,” said Earthquakes President Dave Kaval. “We are proud to partner with two San Jose-based stations with a long history in the area.”
The Quakes are back on KLIV for the fifth straight year. KLIV is a locally-owned station that serves the community and focuses on the news, events and people of Silicon Valley. An affiliate of CNN Radio, KLIV is Silicon Valley’s only all-news radio station. Besides local news coverage, 1590 KLIV is known for its frequent traffic reports covering Silicon Valley roads and freeways.
The broadcast team on the radio will include Ted Ramey, Anthony Passarelli and Joe Cannon. Ramey will serve as the primary play-by-play voice on the radio for the second consecutive year, with Cannon as the color analyst for all home broadcasts. Passarelli, who enters his second season as the play-by-play broadcaster on Comcast SportsNet for the Quakes, will also call a select number of radio games.
Ramey began his broadcasting career when he was just a child, working alongside his father, Hal Ramey (former voice of the San Jose Earthquakes, Oakland A's, Stanford football and basketball, and current sports director at KCBS) at a number of different sporting events. After a lifetime around broadcasting, Ramey began his professional broadcasting career in 2009 with KNBR, working for the San Francisco Giants postgame show. Ramey also started doing work for both ESPN Radio and AP and later moved to reporting traffic for KCBS and then KGO. He then became the morning Sports Anchor for KNBR 1050 and "The Lamont and Tonelli Show" on 107.7 The Bone in 2012. He is currently the host of the 12-3 p.m. PT show five days a week (Monday-Friday) on KNBR 1050.
Cannon is a two-time Major League Soccer Goalkeeper of the Year, who spent seven seasons as a member of the San Jose Earthquakes. He started his Quakes career in 1999, helped San Jose win its first MLS Cup in 2001 and later captured 2002 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year honors. After a stint in France and five years with the Colorado Rapids and LA Galaxy, Cannon returned to San Jose upon its return to MLS in 2008. He joined Vancouver Whitecaps FC after the 2010 season and played through 2013 before returning to the Bay Area, where he grew up in Los Altos Hills.
Passarelli, a four-time NorCal AFTRA award-winning sports anchor and reporter, began his broadcasting career as a news/sports reporter at KPAY in Chico, Calif. He has also provided color commentary and radio play-by- play for San Jose State men’s basketball and Santa Clara University men’s soccer, and is the play-by-play voice of Santa Clara men’s basketball.
The Earthquakes return to KZSF for the sixth straight season and will air all games on the station for the fifth consecutive year. The Quakes aired home games only in Spanish on “La Kaliente” during the 2004, 2005 and 2010 seasons. KZSF is a locally-owned Spanish language station that hosts daily sports talk shows and also plays a wide variety of popular music.
Carlos Cesar Rivera returns for his eighth consecutive season as the Spanish-language voice of the Quakes and his 11th overall. A native of El Salvador, Rivera hosts a popular sports talk show from 5–7 p.m. PT Monday through Friday on La Kaliente that covers MLS, Mexican League soccer, as well as many other sports. He also anchors the morning show on La Kaliente. Rivera, who has worked in radio in the Bay Area for over 30 years, has also called games for the San Francisco 49ers, Oakland Raiders, Oakland Athletics, San Francisco Giants and the San Francisco Bay Blackhawks in his career.
