The San Jose Earthquakes earned three points on Saturday after defeating the LA Galaxy 3-1 in front of a California Clasico-record 50,422 fans at Stanford Stadium. After recording assists on the game-tying and game-winning goals, Quakes midfielder Matias Perez Garcia has now tallied six assists in his last seven games. Defender Clarence Goodson scored the game-winning goal, a header in the 53rd minute, his first MLS goal since 2007. Goodson was named to the MLS Team of the Week (Week 17) for his performance.
With the win, the Quakes improved to 4-1-4 in their last nine matches and are the only Western Conference club to lose one or fewer matches over a nine-game span this season. Also, the club’s five total losses are tied for the second fewest in MLS and the 16 goals the team has allowed are fewest in the league.
The Earthquakes face off against the LA Galaxy for the second time in five days, dueling in the Round of 16 of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup at Avaya Stadium on Wednesday, July 1, beginning at 7:30 p.m. PT. San Jose then travels north to battle the Portland Timbers on Sunday, July 5, beginning at 2:00 p.m. PT, which will be broadcast live on ESPN2, 1590 KLIV and 1370 KZSF.
Last MLS Game
Earthquakes 3, LA Galaxy 1; June 27, 2015; Stanford Stadium in Stanford, Calif.
The Earthquakes defeated the LA Galaxy 3-1 in the 2015 California Clasico at Stanford Stadium in front of a sellout crowd of 50,422. The fourth-consecutive sellout at Stanford was also the largest crowd in the history of the California Clasico. The Galaxy took a 1-0 lead on the right foot of Juninho in the 19th minute. A loose ball rolled out to Juninho about 30 yards from goal and he ripped a one-timed shot that dipped towards the bottom-left corner of the net. Quakes keeper David Bingham lunged to his left, but couldn’t get enough on it to keep it out. San Jose leveled the score line in the 28th minute. Perez Garcia held the ball near the edge of the penalty area and lost his defender with some nifty footwork. After creating space for himself, Perez Garcia played a ball across the box about waist high and Wondolowski volleyed a rocket past Penedo. The Quakes took the lead in the 53rd minute. Perez Garcia drove an in-swinging corner kick into the box and defender Clarence Goodson beat his man to the near post and headed it into the back of the net. It marked Goodson’s first MLS goal since August 11, 2007 and his first as a member of the Earthquakes. San Jose doubled their advantage in 72nd minute. Second-half substitute midfielder Cordell Cato received a pass from midfielder Shea Salinas in the penalty area and proceeded to dribble around multiple defenders before driving a low left-footed strike past Penedo.

MISCELLANEOUS NOTES
Earthquakes in June
The Quakes are 35-23-17 all-time in the month of June.
Midfield Magician
Quakes midfielder Matias Perez Garcia has registered six assists in his last seven MLS matches and San Jose has gone undefeated in those seven contests (4-0-3). In the process, he has boosted his game-winning assist total to four, the most in Major League Soccer. The club is also 4–0 this year when MPG records an assist or scores [at HOU (5/5); vs. CLB (5/16); at SEA (6/20); vs. LA (6/27)].
Getting Forward
Earthquakes defender Clarence Goodson found the back of the net against the Galaxy last weekend, marking his first MLS goal since August 11, 2007 as a member of FC Dallas. His header in the 53rd minute was the eventual game-winner.
Strong Form
While San Jose is currently sitting in seventh place in the Western Conference, numerous factors suggest they have been among the league’s best teams so far this season. The Earthquakes have played fewer matches than all but one team currently ahead of them in the WC playoff race, including having multiple games in hand on four of the six clubs they’re chasing. The Quakes 1.56 points per game average ranks fifth in all of MLS and fourth in the WC. San Jose has also played nine of their 16 matches thus far on the road, and their -2 road goal differential ranks third in the WC. The Quakes are on a hot streak that dates back to May 1, with the club going 4-1-4 over the last nine games. In fact, their success is unprecedented, as they are the only WC club to lose one or fewer matches over a nine-game span this season.
Quakes in the U.S. Open Cup
The Earthquakes are participating in the U.S. Open Cup for the 12th time in team history and they currently hold a 14-11 all-time record in U.S. Open Cup play. San Jose advanced to the Round of 16 by defeating Sacramento Republic FC 6-5 in penalty kicks on June 16 at Avaya Stadium. The Quakes best finish in the tournament came in 2004 when they advanced to the semifinals before losing to the Kansas City Wizards 1-0. Ronald Cerritos is the club’s all-time leader in goals in Open Cup competition with four. The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, recognized as U.S. Soccer's National Club Championship, is an annual competition open to all amateur and professional soccer teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer. The tournament has crowned a champion for 100 consecutive years dating back to 1914. In 1999, the competition was renamed to honor American soccer pioneer Lamar Hunt.
Tough to Break Down at Avaya
The Quakes have not allowed a goal in the last three MLS matches at Avaya Stadium [vs. VAN (4/11); vs. CLB (5/16); vs. DAL (6/7)], a scoreless streak currently at 316 minutes. The team hasn’t allowed a goal at their new home since the first half against Real Salt Lake on April 5.
Undefeated Streak at Home
The San Jose Earthquakes are 4-1-2 at home this season and are currently riding a five-game unbeaten streak at home in league play, with three of those games being played at Avaya Stadium, one at Levi’s® Stadium and one at Stanford Stadium.
Stingy Defense
The San Jose Earthquakes have held their opponents to one or fewer goals in 12 of their 16 matches this season, including eight of the last nine. They have also kept clean sheets in four of the past eight games.
Quakes Among MLS Leaders
Currently, several Earthquakes rank near or at the top of numerous statistical categories. Among them are:

Matias Perez Garcia – 4 game-winning assists (first in MLS; first in Western Conference)

Matias Perez Garcia – 6 assists (tied for fourth in MLS; tied for second in Western Conference)

David Bingham – 4 shutouts (tied for seventh in MLS; tied for sixth in Western Conference)

Chris Wondolowski – 9 goals (second in MLS; first in Western Conference)

Chris Wondolowski – 50 shots (fifth in MLS; second in Western Conference)
Greatest Six-Year Span in MLS History
Including nine goals so far this year, Chris Wondolowski has tallied 95 goals since the start of the 2010 season, the most by any player over a six-year span in MLS history. Wondolowski still has the remainder of this season to add to his league record. Only three other players ever registered more than 80 goals in a six-year span – Taylor Twellman (91 from 2002-07), Roy Lassiter (88 from 1996-01) and Carlos Ruiz (81 from 2002-07).
MLS Goals Since 2010
Chris Wondolowski has been by far the league’s most efficient striker since 2010, leading the league in goals during that time span:
1. Chris Wondolowski - 95 goals
2. Alvaro Saborio  - 63
3. Robbie Keane - 56
4. Thierry Henry - 51
5. Kei Kamara - 49
6. Landon Donovan - 48
7. Sebastian Le Toux - 47
8. Fabian Espindola - 46
9. Dwayne De Rosario - 42
10. Dominic Oduro - 40

Teams under head coach Dominic Kinnear are 122-10-43 when scoring first, a .820 winning percentage. As head coach of the Earthquakes, Kinnear has only lost one game when his team scored first, a 26-1-8 record overall.
Halftime Success
Since the beginning of the 2000 season, the Quakes are 108-3-23 when leading at the half, including a 4-0-2 mark so far in 2015. They were 6-0-2 in 2014, 6-0-3 in 2013 and an impressive 12-0-1 in 2012, with the only draw coming against Portland on Oct. 27 at JELD-WEN Field. In 2011, the club was 4-2-2, 7-0-2 in 2010, 4-0-3 in 2009, 6-1-0 in 2008, 7-0-3 in 2005, 7-0-1 in 2004 and 8-0-1 in 2003. Despite holding a 1-0 halftime lead on May 10, 2008, vs. Columbus, the Quakes were edged by the final score of 3-2. That game marked the team’s first loss since 1999 when holding a halftime advantage.
Making the First One Count
The Earthquakes are 106-12-31 since 2001 when scoring the first goal. The club is 4-0-1 so far in 2015, after going 5-1-4 in 2014. They were 11-1-3 when scoring first in 2013. In 2012, San Jose was 14-2-2, their two losses coming at Vancouver (2-1) on May 5 and at Montreal (3-1) on Aug. 18. The club was 7-4-5 in 2011, 12-0-2 in 2010, 6-1-5 in 2009 and 8-1-3 in 2008. Prior to 2010, San Jose also went undefeated in 2001 (13-0-2), 2003 (11-0-1) and 2005 (14-0-5) when scoring first. The Earthquakes were 12-2-0 in 2002 when finding the back of the net first, only giving up leads two times in losing 2-1 at the LA Galaxy on July 4, and falling at Kansas City by the same score on July 27. In 2004, the Quakes went 8-1-1 when scoring first, the best mark in MLS. The Quakes surrendered a 1-0 advantage and dropped a 2-1 decision at the LA Galaxy on July 4, 2004, losing for just the first time since July 27, 2002, when striking first. The Quakes are also impressive in the playoffs when scoring first, posting an 8-0-1 record all-time.
Earthquakes Forward Chris Wondolowski Among 23 Players on U.S. Roster for 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup
The San Jose Earthquakes announced that forward Chris Wondolowski was among 23 players selected by head coach Jurgen Klinsmann to represent the United States at the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup. Wondolowski was part of the U.S. Gold Cup roster that won the previous tournament in 2013, finishing with a perfect 6-0-0 record. Wondolowski scored five goals, including a first-half hat trick in their opening match against Belize, to tie for the tournament’s Golden Boot. He also made three appearances and one start for the U.S. during their run to the Gold Cup Final in 2011.
Wondolowski Featured in Three-Part MLSSoccer.com Series
San Jose Earthquakes forward and captain Chris Wondolowski is featured in Bau Daigh Warrior, a three-part video series on MLSSoccer.com. While fans know Wondolowski as one of Major League Soccer's most lethal strikers, tallying a league-best 94 goals since 2010, few are aware of his humble upbringing and the hurdles he had to jump to achieve his professional soccer career. Bau Daigh Warrior is the story of the man behind the goals - the first Native American to represent his country at the FIFA World Cup - and how he has honored his roots as a member of the Kiowa tribe. Wondolowski has appeared in 214 games (176 starts) and scored 102 goals, seventh most in MLS history, since making his debut in 2005.
