Last Game vs. LA Galaxy
Earthquakes 3, LA Galaxy 1; June 27, 2015; Stanford Stadium in Stanford, California
The San Jose Earthquakes defeated the LA Galaxy 3-1 in the 2015 California Clasico at Stanford Stadium in front of a sellout crowd of 50,422. The fourth-consecutive sellout at Stanford was also the largest crowd in the history of the California Clasico. San Jose improved to 4-1-4 in their last nine matches and 4-1-2 overall at home this season. San Jose nearly opened the scoring in the first minute of the match. Midfielder Matias Perez Garcia whipped in a corner kick and the ball found its way inside the six-yard box. Forward Chris Wondolowski was one of several Quakes around the ball and attempted to volley it past Galaxy keeper Jaime Penedo, but his shot was blocked by a last-ditch effort by the goalkeeper. The Galaxy took a 1-0 lead on the right foot of Juninho in the 19th minute. A loose ball rolled out to Juninho about 30 yards from goal and he ripped a one-timed shot that dipped towards the bottom-left corner of the net. Quakes keeper David Bingham lunged to his left, but couldn’t get enough on it to keep it out. San Jose leveled the score line in the 28th minute. Perez Garcia held the ball near the edge of the penalty area and lost his defender with some nifty footwork. After creating space for himself, Perez Garcia played a ball across the box about waist high and Wondolowski volleyed a rocket past Penedo. It marked Wondolowski’s Western Conference-leading ninth goal of the season and Perez Garcia’s fifth assist.  The Quakes took the lead in the 53rd minute. Perez Garcia drove an in-swinging corner kick into the box and defender Clarence Goodson beat his man to the near post and headed it into the back of the net. It marked Goodson’s first MLS goal since August 11, 2007 and his first as a member of the Earthquakes. It also marked Perez Garcia’s second assist of the match. San Jose doubled their advantage in 72nd minute. Second-half substitute midfielder Cordell Cato received a pass from midfielder Shea Salinas in the penalty area and proceeded to dribble around multiple defenders before driving a low left-footed strike past Penedo. It marked Cato’s first goal of the year and first since September 7, 2014

MISCELLANEOUS NOTES
Internationally Recognized Defense
Since 2004, the Earthquakes have only allowed more than one goal to an international opponent once [T 2-2 vs. Swansea City on 7/31/2012].
Finding Consistency
The Earthquakes have sent out the same starting back line [Marvell Wynne, Victor Bernardez, Clarence Goodson, Jordan Stewart] and goalkeeper [David Bingham] in nine of the past 10 matches, going 4-2-3 in those games. The club has allowed more than one goal just once in those nine matches and has kept four clean sheets.
Midfield Magician
Quakes midfielder Matias Perez Garcia has registered six assists in his last eight MLS matches and San Jose has only lost once in those eight contests (4-1-3). In the process, he has boosted his game-winning assist total to four, tied for the most in Major League Soccer. The club is also 4–0 this year when MPG records an assist or scores [at HOU (5/5); vs. CLB (5/16); at SEA (6/20); vs. LA (6/27)].
Strong Form
While San Jose is currently sitting in seventh place in the Western Conference, numerous factors suggest they have been better than the table indicates. The Earthquakes have played fewer matches than all but one team currently ahead of them in the WC playoff race, including having multiple games in hand on four of the six clubs they’re chasing. San Jose has also played 10 of their 18 matches thus far on the road.
Tough to Break Down at Avaya
The Quakes have only allowed two goals in the last four MLS matches at Avaya Stadium [vs. VAN (4/11); vs. CLB (5/16); vs. DAL (6/7); vs. HOU (7/10)].
Stingy Defense
The San Jose Earthquakes have held their opponents to one or fewer goals in 13 of their 18 matches this season, including nine of the last 11. They have also kept clean sheets in four of the past 10 games.
Quakes Among MLS Leaders
Currently, several Earthquakes rank near or at the top of numerous statistical categories. Among them are:
•
Matias Perez Garcia – 4 game-winning assists (t-1st in MLS)

•
Matias Perez Garcia – 75 corner kicks (2nd in MLS)

•
David Bingham – 5 shutouts (t-8th in MLS)
•
Chris Wondolowski – 9 goals (t-4th in MLS)
•
Chris Wondolowski – 50 shots (t-6th in MLS)
Greatest Six-Year Span in MLS History
Including nine goals so far this year, Chris Wondolowski has tallied 95 goals since the start of the 2010 season, the most by any player over a six-year span in MLS history. Wondolowski still has the remainder of this season to add to his league record. Only three other players ever registered more than 80 goals in a six-year span – Taylor Twellman (91 from 2002-07), Roy Lassiter (88 from 1996-01) and Carlos Ruiz (81 from 2002-07).
MLS Goals Since 2010
Chris Wondolowski has been by far the league’s most efficient striker since 2010, leading the league in goals during that time span:
1. Chris Wondolowski - 95 goals
2. Alvaro Saborio  - 63
3. Robbie Keane - 59
4. Thierry Henry - 51
5. Kei Kamara - 49
6. Landon Donovan - 48
7. Sebastian Le Toux - 47
8. Fabian Espindola - 46
9. Dwayne De Rosario - 42
10. Dominic Oduro - 40

Teams under head coach Dominic Kinnear are 122-10-43 when scoring first, a .820 winning percentage. As head coach of the Earthquakes, Kinnear has only lost one game when his team scored first, a 26-1-8 record overall.
Halftime Success
Since the beginning of the 2000 season, the Quakes are 108-3-23 when leading at the half, including a 4-0-2 mark so far in 2015. They were 6-0-2 in 2014, 6-0-3 in 2013 and an impressive 12-0-1 in 2012, with the only draw coming against Portland on Oct. 27 at JELD-WEN Field. In 2011, the club was 4-2-2, 7-0-2 in 2010, 4-0-3 in 2009, 6-1-0 in 2008, 7-0-3 in 2005, 7-0-1 in 2004 and 8-0-1 in 2003. Despite holding a 1-0 halftime lead on May 10, 2008, vs. Columbus, the Quakes were edged by the final score of 3-2. That game marked the team’s first loss since 1999 when holding a halftime advantage.
Making the First One Count
The Earthquakes are 106-12-31 since 2001 when scoring the first goal. The club is 4-0-1 so far in 2015, after going 5-1-4 in 2014. They were 11-1-3 when scoring first in 2013. Prior to 2010, San Jose also went undefeated in 2001 (13-0-2), 2003 (11-0-1) and 2005 (14-0-5) when scoring first. The Earthquakes were 12-2-0 in 2002 when finding the back of the net first, only giving up leads two times in losing 2-1 at the LA Galaxy on July 4, and falling at Kansas City by the same score on July 27. In 2004, the Quakes went 8-1-1 when scoring first, the best mark in MLS. The Quakes surrendered a 1-0 advantage and dropped a 2-1 decision at the LA Galaxy on July 4, 2004, losing for just the first time since July 27, 2002, when striking first. The Quakes are also impressive in the playoffs when scoring first, posting an 8-0-1 record all-time.
