Last Game vs. Timbers
Earthquakes 1, Portland Timbers 3; April 16, 2016; Providence Park in Portland, Oregon
The San Jose Earthquakes fell to the Portland Timbers 3-1 at Providence Park, despite a furious comeback attempt in the waning moments of the match. Forward and captain Chris Wondolowski tallied his sixth goal of the season and moved into sole possession of fourth place on the league’s all-time scoring leaderboard with 115. San Jose made five changes to the starting XI that defeated the New York Red Bulls 2-0 three days prior. Midfielders Anibal Godoy, Alberto Quintero and Simon Dawkins, as well as defenders Kip Colvey and Kofi Sarkodie were inserted into the lineup with the club having played three games in eight days. In the 10th minute of the match, Colvey helped keep the match scoreless. After goalkeeper David Bingham was forced off his line, a cross was played in front of the goalmouth, but Colvey was able to clear it out of danger.Three minutes later, the Quakes created a chance themselves. Quintero drove a cross from the right flank, which was headed goal-ward by Dawkins. Goalkeeper Adam Kwarasey, who had very little time to react, knocked the ball out of play for a corner kick. In the 19th minute, forward Quincy Amarikwa took a back-heel pass from Wondolowski and attempted to chip the keeper from the edge of the penalty area. Although his effort beat the net-minder, the ball caromed off the crossbar and was eventually cleared. The Timbers grabbed the lead in the 52nd minute. Forward Jack McInerney gained control of the ball with a slide tackle and tucked his short-range effort just inside the far post. Portland doubled their advantage 13 minutes later when second-half substitute Fanendo Adi found the back of the net on a counter attack. San Jose pulled a goal back one minute into stoppage time when Wondolowski drew and converted a penalty kick, giving him a goal in six of the first seven matches of the season. The Quakes furiously attacked in search of an equalizer, coming close on multiple occasions, but were ultimately exposed on a counter attack. Adi tallied his second goal nine minutes into stoppage time to seal the outcome.
