Weekly Update - Starting XI - 100316

The San Jose Earthquakes take a break from MLS action this week as several players leave to represent their national teams. Earthquakes goalkeeper David Bingham and forward Chris Wondolowski will link up with the United States Men’s National Team for friendlies against Cuba and New Zealand. Midfielder Cordell Cato (Trinidad and Tobago) and defender Shaun Francis (Jamaica) will also join their respective teams for a pair of third round Caribbean Cup qualifying matches, while defender Kip Colvey will connect with New Zealand for two friendlies against Mexico and the United States.
The Quakes earned a 2-1 victory over Real Salt Lake at Avaya Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 1 to keep their playoff hopes alive. Simon Dawkins and Fatai Alashe found the back of the net with Chris Wondolowski and Shea Salinas recording assists on each goal, respectively. Defender Kofi Sarkodie also returned to the Earthquakes starting XI for the first time since July 1.

MISCELLANEOUS NOTES


Dawkins Climbs SJ Record Books
Simon Dawkins scored his 19th career goal with the Earthquakes on Saturday vs. Real Salt Lake, moving him into ninth place for the most goals scored in Earthquakes history.
Assist Machine
Midfielder Shea Salinas notched his fifth assist of the season last Saturday, becoming the only current Earthquakes player to record at least five assists in each of the past five seasons.
October Success
Earthquakes head coach Dominic Kinnear is now 17-9-6 in the month of the October. His .595 winning percentage in October is his best of any month in his career.
Use Your Head
Fatai Alashe scored his fifth goal of his career and fourth as a header on Saturday against RSL.
Wondo’s Assists
The Quakes captain recorded his third assist of the season and 24th as a member of the Earthquakes on Saturday, moving him into a tie for ninth overall in club history (Wade Barrett). The three assists are the most he’s had in a season since recording four in 2014.
One or Less
The Earthquakes have held their opponents to one goal or less in 22 of their 31 games this season.

Liga MX teams Chivas de Guadalajara and Monarcas Morelia will play at Avaya Stadium at 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 7.

Bingham, Wondolowski Called to U.S. National Team
Earthquakes goalkeeper David Bingham and forward Chris Wondolowski were among 23 players called to the U.S. Men’s National Team by head coach Jurgen Klinsmann that will train in advance of the historic meeting against Cuba on Oct. 7 at 1 p.m. PT.
Three Earthquakes Called to Respective National Teams
San Jose Earthquakes midfielder Cordell Cato and defenders Kip Colvey and Shaun Francis have each been called to their respective national teams for a pair of international contests. Cato will join the Trinidad and Tobago National Team for a pair of third round Caribbean Cup qualifying matches as part of Group D. Colvey will connect with the reigning OFC Nations Cup champions, New Zealand All-Whites, for two friendlies in the United States. Francis was called to the Jamaica National Team for two Caribbean Cup qualifiers as part of Group A.
Earthquakes Forward Quincy Amarikwa Undergoes Successful Surgery to Repair Torn ACL and LCL
San Jose Earthquakes forward Quincy Amarikwa underwent a successful surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and lateral collateral ligament (LCL) in his left knee, suffered during the match on Sept. 24 against Sporting Kansas City. The surgery was performed by Dr. Zackary Vaughn and is expected to sideline the striker for at least nine months.
Earthquakes and Uber Announce Partnership
The San Jose Earthquakes announced that the club has partnered with Uber to provide fans with a convenient, reliable transportation option when attending Quakes games. As part of the agreement, Uber will be the presenting sponsor of the Earthquakes rideshare lot, the Uber Zone, located at 1166 Coleman Avenue across the street from Avaya Stadium. The lot will provide Quakes fans a specific location for Uber drop-offs and pick-ups.

ACADEMY UPDATE


The Earthquakes Academy squads took on the Santa Cruz Breakers Academy in Aptos on Sunday, Oct. 2, emerging with several favorable outcomes. Both U-12 teams captured commanding victories, with the Blue team defeating Santa Cruz 6-4 and the Black team shutting out their opponent 5-0. The U-18s battled to level late in their match, but gave up a late goal to fall 2-1.
The teams will return to action this weekend with matches on Saturday and Sunday. The U-12 teams will play both days, facing San Francisco Elite Academy on Saturday at Vista Montana Park and Star Academy FC on Sunday in San Mateo. The U-13s and U-14s will also play Saturday against EBU Bay Oaks at the College of Alameda.
