Weekly Update - Starting XI - 101016

The San Jose Earthquakes return to MLS action with a pair of vital Western Conference matchups this week. On Thursday, Oct. 13, San Jose will head to Commerce City for a clash against the Colorado Rapids. The match kicks off at 6 p.m. PT and will be broadcast live on CSN California, 1590 KLIV and 1370 KZSF.


The Quakes will then return to Avaya Stadium for their final home game of the season, presented by Sutter Health. The game will mark Fan Appreciation Day, in which the Quakes will celebrate their supporters with a number of tributes, capped off by a postgame party at the 7UP Epicenter and the TCL 4K Bar. The matchup kicks off at 2 p.m. PT and will be broadcast live on CSN California, 1590 KLIV and 1370 KZSF.

The San Jose Earthquakes earned a point on the road against the Colorado Rapids with a scoreless draw at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. Earthquakes goalkeeper David Bingham earned his seventh shutout of the season. Both teams saw chances in the first half. In the 24th minute, Dominique Badji was on a break away for the Rapids and found himself up against Bingham who pushed the ball away, forcing Badji to make a wide shot. Defender Victor Bernardez was close to scoring his second goal of the season 35th minute when he shot from outside the 18-yard box, but the ball sailed just over the crossbar. The Earthquakes’ best chance in the first half came in the 41st minute after Ceren’s long cross found Chris Wondolowski’s head, which the forward used to pass the ball to Fatai Alashe. The midfielder shot at Colorado’s goal, causing keeper Tim Howard make a diving save. With the game scoreless at the half, both teams looked to capitalize in the second. Bingham made a vital save in the 68th minute to deny Badji’s right-footed shot from the center of the box. With the final whistle, the game ended scoreless and both teams left with a point.
History of the Quakes – Colorado Rapids Rivalry
The two teams played for the first time in 1996 and the Quakes swept the four-game season series, outscoring Colorado 9-3 in the process … Ramiro Corrales’ first career start came against Colorado on May 8, 1996 … In 1997, Colorado won three of four meetings and swept the Quakes in two games at San Jose … Colorado dominated again in 1998 and had a memorable win at Stanford where they edged the Earthquakes 4-3 in penalty kicks … The Earthquakes returned the favor and beat Colorado 4-3 in penalty kicks in the first match of 1999 and they split the season series 2-2 … 2000 saw the teams split the series again with the Earthquakes winning the first two meetings … on August 25, 2001 the Earthquakes scored three goals in four minutes for their second win of the year against the Rapids. Manny Lagos scored his second goal of the match on an assist from Junior Agogo. Two minutes later Landon Donovan scored on an assist from Ian Russell. Then in the 40th minute Donovan assisted Agogo for the fourth goal. The Quakes added one more and then cruised to a 5-2 victory … In 2002 the teams split the series … In 2003 the Quakes opened the season at Colorado and Brian Ching scored 53 seconds into the match and the Quakes were victorious 2-1 … 2004 began an unbeaten streak in which the Earthquakes did not lose to the Rapids from 2004-2010. The San Jose Earthquakes defeated Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2-1 at BC Place behind goals from Quincy Amarikwa and Simon Dawkins. The victory marked the first of the season on the road for San Jose. In the 12th minute, Dawkins made some space for himself with a bit of nifty footwork before crossing the ball into the box. Second-year midfielder Fatai Alashe headed the ball with pace towards the near post, smacking the crossbar. A scrum ensued in front of net before the ball was eventually cleared. Two minutes later, San Jose got on the board. Anibal Godoy sent in an in-swinging corner kick, which found an unmarked Amarikwa inside the six-yard box. Amarikwa’s header was corralled by keeper David Ousted, but his momentum carried him, and the ball, behind the goal line. The goal gave San Jose their first lead in Vancouver since May 5, 2012. Vancouver nearly equalized in the 20th minute. Forward Masato Kudo beat the offside trap and had a one-on-one with Quakes net minder David Bingham, but his shot sailed up and over the bar. Dawkins doubled the road side’s advantage in the 60th minute. Receiving a pass from Alberto Quintero, Dawkins pushed the ball past his defender and blasted his left-footed shot into the side netting. Vancouver was able to pull a goal back four minutes into stoppage time, but the Quakes held on to secure all three points.
History of the Quakes – Vancouver Whitecaps FC Rivalry

Final Meeting
San Jose is facing off against Colorado for the third and final time this season, with the Earthquakes holding a 1-0-1 advantage in the series. The Quakes are looking to go undefeated against their Western Conference foes for the fifth consecutive season.

Avaya Stadium to Host USWNT Friendly Against Romania Nov. 10
The San Jose Earthquakes and U.S. Soccer announced today that Avaya Stadium will host the U.S. Women's National Team for a friendly against Romania on Thursday, Nov. 10. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. PT and the match will be televised on ESPN2.
Tickets for the match will be available to the general public on Friday, Oct. 14 at 10 a.m. PT via ticketmaster.com, by phone at 1-800-745-3000 and at all Ticketmaster ticket centers throughout the San Francisco Bay Area.
Avaya Stadium Selected to Host 2016 NCAA Women’s Soccer College Cup
The NCAA announced that the West Coast Conference was selected to host the 2016 NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Championship at Avaya Stadium in San Jose, Calif. from December 2-4. The WCC partnered with the San Jose Sports Authority and Avaya Stadium to earn the bid. It marks the fourth time the Women’s College Cup makes its way to the Bay Area, and first time in 16 years, as it was previously held at Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara in 1996 and Spartan Stadium in San Jose in 1999 and 2000.
Earthquakes to Host Fan Appreciation Day on Oct. 16
The San Jose Earthquakes will host Fan Appreciation Day, presented by Sutter Health, on Sunday, Oct. 16 during the club’s final home match of the 2016 MLS regular season against Vancouver Whitecaps FC with kickoff scheduled for 2 p.m. The Quakes will celebrate the fans throughout the day with a number of tributes, capped off by a postgame party at the 7UP Epicenter and the TCL 4K Bar.

ACADEMY UPDATE


The Earthquakes Academy squads had another successful weekend, going undefeated in all six of their matchups. The U-12 teams played against the San Francisco Elite Academy and Star Academy FC on Saturday and Sunday respectively, capturing wins in all four games. Both the U-13 and U-14 squads shut out EBU Bay Oaks on Saturday, scoring nine total goals in the two contests.
The teams have another busy slate this week with the U-12s, U-13s and U-14s taking on Santa Rosa United on Saturday. The U-16s and U-18s will play both days, facing the Portland Timbers and Seattle Sounders FC Academy squads on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
