MATCH PREVIEW: Quakes take on RSL for first time in 2018

The San Jose Earthquakes will travel to Utah this week to take on Real Salt Lake on Saturday, June 23 at 7:00 p.m. PT. The match will be broadcast live on NBC Sports Bay Area, KNBR 1050 and 1370 KZSF.


Quakes players Anibal Godoy and Harold Cummings are currently participating in the 2018 FIFA World Cup with the Panama National team. On Monday, June 18, Panama took on Belgium in their first match of the tournament and suffered a 3-0 defeat to a squad ranked third in FIFA’s power rankings. Panama will face England on June 24th and Tunisia on June 28th. The Quakes will show all 64 World Cup games on the video board at Avaya Stadium, and will serve coffee and donuts for fans that arrive for the first match of each match day. The Quakes drew 2-2 to the New England Revolution this past Wednesday, June 13. Forward Danny Hoesen tallied his eighth and ninth goals of the season and currently shares the fourth place spot on MLS’ top scorers list in 2018.

The San Jose Earthquakes fell to Real Salt Lake 4-0 at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah. Despite the result, the Earthquakes remained just two points out of the sixth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. With the score 1-0 in the 61st minute, Quakes midfielder Anibal Godoy was shown his second yellow card of the match, forcing San Jose to play a man down for the final half hour. RSL capitalized on the man advantage by adding three late scores.


History of the Quakes – Real Salt Lake Rivalry

Real Salt Lake joined MLS as an expansion side prior to the 2005 campaign … The two teams played to a 2-2 draw in their first-ever meeting on April 30, 2005, at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City, with Alejandro Moreno providing a late equalizer for San Jose … After going 2-0-2 over their first four MLS regular-season meetings, the Quakes dropped their first league tilt to RSL, 3-1, on May 31, 2008, at Rice-Eccles … The Quakes suffered two straight home defeats in league play in shutout fashion in back-to-back season openers in 2010 (3-0) and 2011 (1-0) … On March 19, the Quakes and RSL kicked off the 2011 season at Buck Shaw Stadium in a match later dubbed “The Great Deluge” as RSL took a 1-0 decision in a rainstorm through a 64th-minute Kyle Beckerman strike from 25 yards out that glanced off the left post and went in.
