On Tuesday morning, the San Jose Earthquakes announced the assistants on head coach Matias Almeyda’s staff. Here are five things to know about assistant coach Benjamin Galindo:


  1. Galindo’s playing career includes stints at Tampico, Chivas, Santos Laguna, Cruz Azul and Pachuca. He helped his club teams win four Mexican Primera Division championships and led Cruz Azul to the 1997 CONCACAF Champions Cup title.
  2. Over the course of his club career, he scored nearly 200 goals in more than 700 appearances, all of which came in Mexico.
  3. Internationally, Galindo made 65 appearances for the Mexico National Team, scoring 28 goals. He represented his nation of birth at the 1994 FIFA World Cup, as well as the 1993 and 1995 Copa America tournaments.
  4. Following his playing career, Galindo became an assistant coach for Chivas in 2002, later being elevated to head coach in 2004.
  5. In addition to his stints with Chivas, Galindo also served as head coach for Santos Laguna, Cruz Azul ad Atlas, leading Santos to the Clausura 2012 league title. He was named the competition’s best manager that season.
