SAN JOSE, Calif. – San Jose Earthquakes forward Chris Wondolowski was named to the United States National Team roster for the upcoming CONCACAF Gold Cup. U.S. head coach Bob Bradley released the full roster for the tournament on Monday. Wondolowski will join the U.S. for training camp on Sunday, May 29.
The United States plays Spain in a friendly match prior to the start of the Gold Cup on Saturday, June 4 at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass. live on ESPN and Univision at 1:30 p.m. PT. Following that friendly, the U.S. will begin play in Group C on Tuesday, June 7 with a match against Canada at Ford Field in Detroit. The Americans then face Panama on June 11 at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Fla., before concluding group play on June 14 against Guadeloupe at Livestrong Sporting Park in Kansas City, Kan.
The quarterfinals begin on June 18 with the semifinal matches scheduled for June 22. The Gold Cup final will be played Saturday, June 25 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif.
“Being named to the US National Team is an incredible honor and I’m excited to get to work with the guys next week,” Wondolowski said. “This is a dream come true to get out there and represent my country in an elite competition like the Gold Cup.”
Wondolowski has been called up once before to represent his country. He spent the month of January earlier this year in Southern California at a training camp at The Home Depot Center. He started and played 60 minutes for the U.S. against Chile at The Home Depot Center on Jan. 22 to earn his first cap.
Following a breakout campaign for Wondolowski in 2010, the Danville native leads San Jose with five goals in 2011, while also recording two assists. Last year, he helped lead the Earthquakes to the MLS Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2005. The former Chico State star scored a single-season franchise record 18 goals to win the Budweiser Golden Boot. Wondolowski finished third in the Major League Soccer MVP race, appearing in 28 matches and scoring a league-leading nine game-winning goals. He also accounted for 52.9 percent (18 of 34) of the team’s goal output, which is second in MLS history only to Carlos Ruiz’s 2002 season with the LA Galaxy. Since arriving in San Jose, he has scored 26 goals in just 54 regular season appearances, which has him fourth on the team’s all-time scoring list.
