Academy: Quakes duo sign National Letter of Intents

Signing Day: Academy product Sam Engs committed to University of Pennsylvania on Wednesday

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Two current members of the San Jose Earthquakes U-18 Youth Development Academy squad made their college choices earlier this week on National Signing Day.


Samuel Engs, a defensive midfielder from Lafayette, Calif., is will go from a member of the Quakes to the Quakers after signing on with the University of Pennsylvania, a private institution located in Philadelphia, Penn. The Quakers compete in the NCAA Division I and Ivy League.


Engs was one of four members of the Earthquakes Youth Academy who joined the first team on its 10-day trip to England in February of 2011. Alongside the Quakes first team, he had the opportunity to train with the Tottenham Hotspur Academy at Spurs Lodge, and played in a match with the Earthquakes Reserves against Colchester United. Engs is currently a senior at The College Preparatory School in Oakland.


Wyatt McCall committed to Swarthmore College, also a private school in Pennsylvania. The school is in Swarthmore, Penn., about 11 miles southwest of Philadelphia. The Garnet are members of the NCAA Division III.


McCall, also a College Prep senior, earned All-Bay Counties League East First Team recognition in November. The midfield duo previously played together for the Mustang Academy U-16 team in 2009-10, when Engs captained the side.


In addition to McCall and Engs, Earthquakes defender Trevor Long made a verbal commitment to Cal. Long is a junior at Granada High School in Livermore, Calif.
