SAN JOSE, Calif. – San Jose Earthquakes players Victor Bernardez and Marvin Chavez have been called to Honduran national team duty ahead of upcoming friendlies against Brazil and Ecuador.
Honduras faces 2014 World Cup hosts Brazil on Saturday, Nov. 16 at Sun Life Stadium in Miami. They’ll then head to Houston to play Ecuador on Tuesday, Nov. 19 at BBVA Compass Stadium.
Bernardez, 31, has 68 career caps with Los Catrachos. He started nine of Honduras’ 10 matches during the final stage of CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying, helping his nation make the field of 32 heading to Brazil next year. Bernardez anchors an Earthquakes back line that recorded nine shutouts in 2013 and yielded just two goals over the final two months of play. He started 25 games for the Quakes in 2013, recording one goal and one assist in the process.
Chavez, 30, has 38 career caps for his country. The La Ceiba native last suited up for Los Catrachos as a substitute in their 2-1 win against Mexico on Sept. 6. He was also a key component of their 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup squad, appearing in four of five matches and scoring a goal in a 2-0 win against Haiti on July 8 at Red Bull Arena. Chavez made 15 appearances and had one goal and one assist for the Earthquakes in 2013.
