Last MLS Game
Earthquakes 1, Philadelphia Union 2; Sept 5, 2015; Avaya Stadium, San Jose, CA

The San Jose Earthquakes fell to the Philadelphia Union 2-1 at Avaya Stadium on Saturday night. Earthquakes forward Chris Wondolowski scored the club’s lone goal, a penalty in the 64th minute, and he has now scored four goals in his last four games. The Quakes were without three midfielders – Anibal Godoy, Marc Pelosi and Sanna Nyassi – due to international call-ups. The club, however, welcomed back Fatai Alashe and Matias Perez Garcia, who made their first start together in the center of San Jose’s midfield for the first time since August 2. In the 23rd minute, defender Marvell Wynne threw a long ball into the box to forward Quincy Amarikwa, who was able to head the ball to the back post. However, Union goalkeeper John McCarthy was in position to make the save. The Earthquakes defense took a hit when powerful center back Victor Bernardez was pulled from the match after sustaining a strained hamstring. Midfielder JJ Koval entered the match as his replacement in the 39th minute. Three minutes before halftime, Perez Garcia swung in a left-footed cross to the back post for Amarikwa, but he could not turn the pass into a shot on goal as it drifted just high. In the 47th minute, defender Marvell Wynne crossed in a ball from the right side of the pitch to forward Chris Wondolowksi. Wondolowski flicked it to Amarikwa, who was able to get a foot on the ball, but his curling shot caromed off the right goal post. In the 63rd minute, defender Shaun Francis swung in a cross from the left side of the field. The pass was just out of the reach of Perez Garcia, but bounced up and touched the hand of Union defender Fabinho. The Quakes were awarded a penalty kick, which Wondolowksi buried to give the Quakes a 1-0 lead. It marked Wondolowski’s 13th goal of the season and 106th of his career. Wondolowski is now just two goals shy of tying Jason Kreis for fifth on the league’s all-time scoring leaderboard.  The Union responded in the 74th minute with a goal of their own, when forward Conor Casey’s header snuck into the back of the net. Casey’s goal snapped a 447-minute shutout streak for San Jose that dated back to August 14. It was the longest shutout streak in Major League Soccer this season. The Union then took the lead in the 85th minute when Casey headed a set piece past Quakes goalkeeper David Bingham.

Last Game vs. Seattle Sounders FC
Earthquakes 2, Seattle Sounders FC 0; June 20, 2014; CenturyLink Field in Seattle, Wash.

The San Jose Earthquakes won for the second time in 2015 at CenturyLink Field, defeating Seattle Sounders FC 2-0 in a Western Conference battle. Matias Perez Garcia scored his first goal of the year and set up Sanna Nyassi for the Quakes’ other goal. David Bingham made three saves as the Quakes earned their fourth shutout in the past seven games. A quick counter brought San Jose the first chance of the match. Nyassi broke out quickly and found Adam Jahn across the field. The big forward slipped a pass through for Shea Salinas just inside the left side of the box. Just as Salinas shot, a Seattle defender stretched to deflect the shot out for a corner. Quakes goalkeeper David Bingham came up big 12 minutes into the match with a leaping save. Lamar Neagle shook free of his defender 25 yards from goal and unleashed a drive that seemed destined for the back of the net, but Bingham jumped and touched the ball over the bar to keep Sounders FC off the board. The Quakes struck first on a goal from Nyassi, who returned this week from international duty, in the 28th minute. Salinas got the ball on the wing and dribbled toward the middle and rolled a pass to Perez Garcia. Perez Garcia made some space and poked a ball into the path of Nyassi and the Gambian international made no mistake, smashing a shot past Sounders FC goalkeeper Stefan Frei into the upper corner. Perez Garcia gave the Quakes a two-goal advantage in the 73rd minute with a great effort, beating two Sounders FC defenders in tight space to score. Cordell Cato, who entered the game at halftime took a pass from Perez Garcia and took off on a long run. He drew two defenders and pushed a pass back to Perez Garcia. The Argentinean midfielder dribbled between two defenders before hooking a shot into the upper corner for a 2-0 lead.

The Quakes extended their shutout streak to 447 minutes by keeping the Philadelphia Union off the board until the 74th minute on Saturday. The 447-minute streak is the longest shutout streak in MLS this season.

Return to the Starting XI
With both Anibal Godoy and Marc Pelosi, the team’s starting center midfielders in their win against the Galaxy, away on international duty, the Quakes welcomed back Fatai Alashe and Matias Perez Garcia to the starting XI. The team’s regular starters for much of the season, Alashe and Perez Garcia hadn’t started a match together since Aug. 2, due to various injuries and suspensions.

Wondo Scores Again
By converting a penalty kick in the 64th minute, Earthquakes forward Chris Wondolowski has now tallied four goals in his last four games. He now has 106 career goals, two shy of tying Jason Kreis for fifth on the league’s all-time leaderboard.

Wondo Against Seattle
Wondolowski has scored nine goals against Seattle Sounders FC in his career, including two this season, four more than any other player in MLS history.

Salinas Against Seattle
Quakes midfielder Shea Salinas has recorded four assists against Seattle in his career, trailing only Brad Davis (6) and Landon Donovan (6) for most against Sounders FC all-time.

Searching for Win #3
On Saturday, San Jose will be searching for their third win of the season against Seattle, having already defeated their Western Conference rival twice at CenturyLink Field. It would be the second time the Quakes went 3-0-0 against Seattle in a season, joining 2012. San Jose has only held a perfect record against a single opponent, while playing three or more games in a season against that opponent, five times in club history [COL –1996/2012; DAL – 2003; RSL – 2012; SEA – 2012].

A Rare Home Game
Four of the last five matches against Seattle Sounders FC, and each of the last three, have been played at CenturyLink Field. The Quakes haven’t hosted Seattle since Aug. 2, 2014.

In 2004, the Quakes went 8-1-1 when scoring first, the best mark in MLS. The Quakes surrendered a 1-0 advantage and dropped a 2-1 decision at the LA Galaxy on July 4, 2004, losing for just the first time since July 27, 2002, when striking first.
