Following their first matchless week of the season, the Earthquakes return to their home turf for a clash with D.C. United at Avaya Stadium on Saturday, April 2, presented by Gyft. As part of the 20th Anniversary celebration of the league’s inaugural match between San Jose and D.C. at Spartan Stadium in 1996, 10,000 fans will receive throwback Clash jersey t-shirts.

Last week, six Quakes players were called into their respective national teams. Midfielder Fatai Alashe played 24 minutes in the U.S. U-23s’ 1-1 draw against Colombia as part of a two-leg Olympic Qualifying Playoff. In addition, several Earthquakes participated in various World Cup Qualifiers. Simon Dawkins helped Jamaica earn a point against Costa Rica, playing 29 minutes in a 1-1 draw. Panama’s midfielders Anibal Godoy and Alberto Quintero each started and played 90 and 71 minutes, respectively, in a goalless draw against Haiti. Forward Chris Wondolowski and goalkeeper David Bingham were with the United States during their 2-0 loss to Guatemala, but neither featured in the match. The San Jose Earthquakes scored early in the first half and notched a second goal early in the second half on the way to a 2-0 victory over D.C. United at RFK Stadium. San Jose has now won three games in a row and outscored opponents 8-0 over that stretch. Chris Wondolowski and Shea Salinas scored the goals for the Quakes and David Bingham recorded his ninth shutout of the season. For the second straight match, San Jose burst out of the gate with an early goal. Shaun Francis received a pass from Quincy Amarikwa in the box and his low shot was parried by United goalkeeper Andrew Dykstra. The rebound fell to Fatai Alashe, but his shot was deflected to Wondolowski just outside the six-yard box. He calmly slotted the ball past Dykstra to the far post for his 105th career goal, moving him past Dwayne De Rosario into sole possession of sixth all-time in goals in MLS history. The Quakes defense held firm for the rest of the half to send San Jose to the locker room with a 1-0 advantage. Marvell Wynne broke up a D.C. counter attack in the 16th minute to prevent a goal and Clarence Goodson and Victor Bernardez cleared a number of threatening corners and crosses to keep D.C. off the board. Just seven minutes into the second half, San Jose doubled the lead after some great work from Quincy Amarikwa. After receiving the ball at midfield, he dribbled past one defender and then ran 30 yards to the edge of the box before finding Salinas to his left. Salinas curled a right-footed shot to the back post for his second goal of the year for a 2-0 lead. Bingham came up huge in the latter stages of the match with an impressive stop on Davy Arnaud. The D.C. United midfielder received a pass in space on the left side of the box with only Bingham to beat. Bingham rushed off his line, made himself big and deflected Arnaud’s shot. Goodson recovered and cleared the loose ball out of danger to preserve the clean sheet.

United are two of the 10 original MLS teams from the inaugural 1996 season … San Jose beat D.C. in MLS’ historic inaugural match, 1-0, on April 6, 1996, before 31,683 fans at Spartan Stadium … In 2005, the Quakes were blanked by D.C. ACADEMY UPDATE
The Earthquakes U-17 Academy team travelled to Frisco, Texas last week to battle some of the elite youth teams from across the globe in the Generation adidas Cup. After taking the West Regional by storm in the Qualifiers with a 5-1 record and impressive +14-goal differential, the Quakes kept the momentum going with a 3-0 win over Columbus Crew SC in the opener. Subsequent matches against Universidad de Chile, Villarreal and Toronto FC were hard-fought matches that ultimately did not go San Jose’s way, but the Quakes were able to rebound with a 2-1 victory over Aspire Academy from Qatar to close out the competition.
