SAN JOSE, Calif. –
The San Jose Earthquakes defeated the New York Red Bulls 2-0 on Wednesday night behind goals from midfielder Fatai Alashe and forward Chris Wondolowski. The victory extended San Jose’s unbeaten streak at Avaya Stadium to nine games, dating back to last season.
San Jose nearly broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute. After Red Bulls midfielder Felipe slipped near half-field, Wondolowski broke away and set up a one-on-one with Robles, but narrowly sent his shot wide left.
Seven minutes later, the Quakes were able to snatch the lead. Midfielder Matias Perez Garcia touched a pass to Alashe at the edge of the penalty area and his deflected shot snuck past Robles at the far post.
New York nearly equalized to start the second half. In the 47th minute, halftime-substitute Bradley Wright-Phillips took a quick left-footed shot from the center of the box. Goalkeeper David Bingham fully extended to his left to make the save.
The Quakes doubled their advantage in the 55th minute. Shea Salinas sent a pinpoint cross from the left flank to Wondolowski, who headed it past Robles. Wondolowski, the league’s current leading scorer with five goals this season, drew level with Ante Razov for the fourth most career goals (114) in MLS history.
San Jose hits the road to face the Portland Timbers at Providence Park on Saturday, April 16. The match kicks off at 7:30 p.m. PT and will be broadcast live on CSN Plus, 1590 KLIV and 1370 KZSF.
