Last Game vs. LA Galaxy
Earthquakes 1, LA Galaxy 3; March 19, 2016; StubHub Center, Carson, California
The San Jose Earthquakes dropped their first game of the MLS Season, going down 3-1 to California Clasico rival LA Galaxy at the StubHub Center. Earthquakes midfielder Simon Dawkins was shown a straight red card on the stroke of half-time with the match scoreless. And the home side took advantage following the break with two goals from Gyasi Zardes and a penalty from Robbie Keane. A solitary reply from striker Chris Wondolowski, his third goal in three matches, leaves San Jose, who had beaten Colorado Rapids and Portland Timbers, with a 2-1-0 record. Earthquakes coach Dominic Kinnear was forced into making one change from the side that toppled the MLS champion Timbers 2-1 last time out. Central defender Clarence Goodson (back) was replaced by offseason signing Andres Imperiale. The Argentinian defender, 29, came in for his debut.  The Galaxy suffered a blow when former England international Steven Gerrard came off after just three minutes with a calf injury. In a first half of few chances and four yellow cards, striker Quincy Amarikwa had San Jose’s best opening when his header from winger Alberto Quintero’s cross was deflected over the bar. With both sides cancelling each other out, referee Ismail Elfath showed Dawkins a straight red card late in first half injury time for what he deemed a foul on the Galaxy’s Sebastian Lletget in the middle third. The sending off was the first of the Jamaica international’s career. Midfielder Anibal Godoy came to the rescue for the Earthquakes after the restart, clearing a Mike Magee shot off the line, but on 56 minutes Zardes pounced from close range to give the Galaxy the lead. The same man doubled that advantage on 62 minutes when a long ball over the top from Van Damme could only be cleared into the path of Zardes who tapped in his second. Amarikwa came close to connecting with a cross from substitute winger Shea Salinas and on 71 minutes Argentine forward Matias Perez Garcia replaced Fatai Alashe for his first appearance of the season. Wondolowski pulled a goal back after he was set up on the break by right back Marvell Wynne but the Galaxy completed their victory when defender Victor Bernardez was adjudged to have fouled Robbie Keane and the Irishman converted the spot kick.
