Brandi Chastain - World Cup Celebration - 1999

Before United States soccer icon Brandi Chastain became a World Cup champion and an Olympic gold medalist, the San Jose native fostered her love for soccer as a young girl in the confines of Spartan Stadium in the 1970s.

In a recent ‘The Players’ Tribune’ article, Chastain, who authors the piece herself, reflects on how she fell in love with soccer growing up in San Jose, crediting the Earthquakes and the legendary George Best for her infatuation with the sport:

Soccer legend Brandi Chastain credits Quakes, George Best for her love of the game in 'The Players' Tribune' -
"The same year I signed up for the youth team, we got season tickets to the San Jose Earthquakes. My parents would take me to the stadium for games, and from the very first one we went to I was just transfixed by the players — one in particular: George Best.

"When I saw him, I said to myself, I want to do that when I grow up. That looks awesome."
