SAN JOSE, Calif. – The San Jose Earthquakes today announced several of the club’s matches for the 2016 preseason. Among the opponents scheduled are the New York Cosmos, Sacramento Republic FC and the Quakes U-18 Academy.

The Earthquakes’ preseason opens on Wednesday, January 27 with a season ticket holder-only event against the Quakes U-18 Academy squad at Avaya Stadium.

On Saturday, February 20, San Jose will travel to Bonney Field to take on the club’s USL affiliate Sacramento Republic FC, with the kickoff time to be announced at a later date. It marks the second consecutive year that the Quakes will take on Sacramento in the preseason.

One week later, on Saturday, February 27, San Jose will host the New York Cosmos at Avaya Stadium for the first time. The match kicks off at 7 p.m. and is the club’s final preseason tune-up before the 2016 regular season.

The Cosmos are the defending North American Soccer League champions and are based out of Hempstead, New York. Originally founded in 1970, their rivalry with the Earthquakes commenced when San Jose joined the NASL four years later. The Cosmos, reborn in 2010, joined the modern NASL prior to the 2013 season. Giovanni Savarese, who scored 10 goals in 30 appearances for the Venezuela National Team, has managed the club for the past three seasons, winning two NASL championships during his tenure. Savarese appeared in four matches for the Earthquakes during the 2000 season, tallying one assist.
