Dan DeGeer currently serves as the Head Coach for The Town FC, the Earthquakes’ MLS NEXT Pro team.
Now in his third full season, DeGeer has overseen a successful period in the team’s history, having made the postseason in both of his first two campaigns, advancing to the Western Conference Semifinals twice and winning the team’s first-ever Pacific Division title in 2024 after setting a club record with 51 points earned.
So far in 2025, he has The Town FC in playoff contention once again, earning MLSNP Coach of the Month honors while the squad captured Team of the Month in May after winning all four of their games by a combined score of 12-0. The club-record streak consisted of home shutout victories over Portland Timbers 2 (5-0) and St. Louis CITY2 (4-0), followed by two road triumphs to close the month—a penalty shootout over Sporting Kansas City II (0-0, 5-4) and a blanking of Colorado Rapids 2 (3-0). The four consecutive clean sheets breaks the record set by last year’s squad that earned three straight shutouts in September by a combined 5-0 margin.
A parade of Homegrown talents and MLS SuperDraft picks have logged major minutes in their pro development under DeGeer’s tutelage in MLS NEXT Pro en route to the Quakes’ first team, namely midfielder Beau Leroux, who scored five goals for TTFC in 2024 and is currently an MLS Young Player of the Year candidate. Defenders Daniel Munie, Jamar Ricketts and Oscar Verhoeven (now on loan with San Diego FC), along with forward Ousseni Bouda thrived in the MLS NEXT Pro environment as well before making the jump to the first team. Mexico Youth National Team goalkeeper Emi Ochoa, who started in each of the last three MLSNP seasons for TTFC and played in 48 matches, was transferred to Liga MX’s Cruz Azul earlier this year at age 20. After earning a backup spot on their first team, Ochoa was part of the La Máquina squad that won the Concacaf Champions Cup in June.
Overall, the club has prioritized development for its young players, using more academy players than any other team to log minutes. In 2024, The Town FC finished first in the league in both average player age (18.1) and academy players registered (37). The next wave of current Homegrown Players include U.S. Youth National Team players Cruz Medina, Edwyn Mendoza, Kaedren Spivey and Chance Cowell.
DeGeer began his time at the helm as Interim Head Coach of the team when it was previously known as Earthquakes II following Alex Covelo’s rise to the first team in April 2022. DeGeer led Quakes II to an 11-6-4 record during his 21 matches at the helm, and the team finished with the sixth-best record of all 21 clubs.
A coach in the Quakes Academy since 2017, DeGeer began the 2022 season as head coach of the U17s before also becoming interim head coach of Quakes II. During his time with the Quakes Academy, DeGeer helped develop many future Homegrown Players, including Medina, Ochoa, and current first-team midfielder and U.S. Youth National Team player Niko Tsakiris.
Prior to joining the Quakes organization, DeGeer has also held coaching or director roles for the University of San Francisco, San Francisco State, Star Academy, and Burlingame Soccer Club, among others. He has also served as an assistant coach for the United States U17 National Team.
A native of Tigard, Oregon, DeGeer played collegiately at the University of San Francisco, where he won the 2004 and 2005 West Coast Conference Championship and received three straight NCAA bids. In his final season at USF, he was selected First Team All-WCC and drafted by the LA Galaxy. He also played for the U.S. National Futsal Team in 2008.
DeGeer holds an Elite Formation Coaching License, offered through MLS and the French Football Federation, a USSF National A-Youth License, and completed courses through the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and ACF Fiorentina. He also possesses a master’s degree in kinesiology from Fresno Pacific University.
