Opara and Generation adidas Team Beat Real Madrid Reserves
Quakes defender Ike Opara played 61 minutes for the Generation adidas team last week in a 2-1 win over Real Madrid in Madrid. It was Opara’s first game action since breaking his foot on July 31 against Seattle Sounders FC. The Generation adidas team includes some of the best young players in MLS. The team is coached by the FC Dallas coaching staff, headed by MLS Coach of the Year, Schellas Hyndman. They will take on Rayo Vallecano FC’s reserves on Tues. Dec. 7 and Atletico Madrid’s reserves on Wednesday, Dec. 8 before returning home.

Johnson Helps Jamaica win Digicel Cup
Earthquakes forward Ryan Johnson helped Jamaica win the Digicel Cup over the past week in Martinique. Jamaica went unbeaten in the tournament, defeating Guadeloupe in the final on penalty kicks. Jamaica defeated Antigua and Barbuda (3-1), Guadeloupe (2-0) and Guyana (4-0) in the group stage to earn a spot in the semifinals, before defeating Grenada 2-1 in the semifinals. Johnson scored in the group stage game against Guadeloupe and played 90 minutes against Guyana. After starting in the semifinal against Grenada, he left in the 26th minute with a hamstring injury and missed the championship game against Guadeloupe.

Scouting
The Earthquakes technical staff is deep into scouting this month with plans to fly around the country and the world to look at players. Assistant coach Mark Watson was busy over the weekend, attending two NCAA Tournament matches. He saw North Carolina defeat Southern Methodist on penalty kicks to earn a spot in the College Cup. He also saw Akron defeat Cal in the quarterfinals. Watson and head coach Frank Yallop will depart this weekend for Osaka, Japan to attend the J-League player combine. They will be in Japan from Dec. 13-16 for this combine.  Assistant coach Ian Russell will also travel to Ghana from December 16-19 to scout players. Finally, General Manager John Doyle will attend the College Cup this weekend in Santa Barbara as North Carolina, Akron, Michigan and Louisville attempt to take home the NCAA Championship.
