FEATURE: 3 things to know when Club León & the Quakes kick off tonight

Landon Donovan - clapping - Leon

The San Jose Earthquakes are hosting Mexican side Club Leon on Saturday night at Avaya Stadium. Here are three things to know about the international friendly.

  1. LD2SJ: Some Quakes fans love him, some still hold anger, but whichever side of the fence you’re on, we all agree that Landon Donovan’s return to San Jose is a big deal. He spent four years with the Earthquakes in the early 2000s and helped the club earn those two shiny stars above the team’s crest.
  2. Where they rank: Leon currently sits in 12th place in the Mexican Torneo Clausura with a 4-5-3 record after 12 match days. The club’s offense ranks tied for seventh in Mexico with 16 goals.
  3. Rare opportunity: Saturday’s match is just the 11th time ever that San Jose will be taking on a team from Mexico. The team’s most recent friendly against a Mexican side, a 4-3 loss at the hands of Pachuca in 2016, was their first since 2012.
