The San Jose Earthquakes announced on Monday the acquisition of Designated Player Jamiro Monteiro in a trade with the Philadelphia Union. Here are five things to know about the Quakes’ newest attacking midfielder:

1. Monteiro competed for the Philadelphia Union for the past three seasons, totaling nine goals and 21 assists in 75 regular season appearances (70 starts). Monteiro is one of just four players in Major League Soccer to tally at least six assists in each of the past three seasons, along with Quakes midfielder Cristian Espinoza.

2. During his time with Philadelphia, the 28-year-old led the Union to a top-three finish in the Eastern Conference each regular season (2019, 2020, 2021), the 2020 Supporters’ Shield, and reached the Eastern Conference Final in 2021 and the Eastern Conference Semifinal in 2019.

3. Monteiro also led Philadelphia to the semifinals of the 2021 Concacaf Champions League, tallying two goals and two assists. His contributions earned him a spot on the 2021 Concacaf Champions League Team of the Tournament.

4. Prior to playing in MLS, Monteiro played for FC Metz (2018-19), Heracles Almelo (2017-18), and SC Cambuur-Leeuwarden (2015-17), where began his professional career.

5. The Rotterdam, Netherlands native also carries international experience, tallying 20 appearances and one goal for the Cape Verde national team, the nation of his parents’ heritage. He most recently made three appearances as part of the Africa Cup of Nations in January 2022.
