The San Jose Earthquakes announced on Wednesday the signing of Costa Rica National Team defender Francisco Calvo. Here are five things to know about the Quakes’ newest member:
1. Calvo joins San Jose on a contract for the 2022 MLS season with a club option for 2023. He received his U.S. Green Card in 2018 and will not count as an international on the Quakes’ roster.
2. The 2018 MLS All-Star carries over five years of MLS experience after playing for Minnesota United FC (2017-19) and Chicago Fire FC (2019-21). He has since tallied 10 goals and nine assists across 122 MLS appearances (119 starts).
3. Prior to playing in MLS, Calvo competed for Deportivo Saprissa (2015-16), Herediano (2013-15), and Nordsjaelland (2013). He began his career at the youth ranks of Saprissa (2005-10).
4. A native of San José, Costa Rica, Calvo is a regular with the Costa Rica National Team, scoring seven goals in 67 appearances. His international career features a variety of competitions including the Concacaf Gold Cup, Concacaf Nations League, Copa America, Copa Centroamericana, and the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
5. The 29-year-old becomes the fifth Costa Rican player in club history and first since Marco Ureña in 2017 [Alejandro Sequeira (1999), Mauricio Solis (1999-00), Marco Ureña (2017), Mauricio Wright (1999-00)].
