SANDY, Utah — Jack Jasinski’s goal in the last minute of stoppage time lifted the San Jose Earthquakes to a 1-1 road draw with Real Salt Lake on Wednesday night at America First Field to extend the team’s unbeaten streak to eight league matches.
The Earthquakes almost struck first in minute 18 when Nick Fernandez was one-on-one with RSL goalkeeper Rafael Cabral but his chip in the box from the right half-space was just wide of the far post. As the first half wore on, the hosts threatened the net when Morgan Guilavogui attempted a shot from long range but it was saved by a diving Angus Gunn.
After a scoreless 45 minutes devoid of chances, the match began to open up, with both sides taking their shots at net. In minute 72, the Earthquakes won a corner and Timo Werner picked out Reid Roberts, but his glancing header floated over the crossbar. In minute 76, RSL’s Aiden Hezarkhani received a pass in the box, turned and fired, but Ian Harkes got just enough of the shot to redirect it wide of the far post. Three minutes later, the Claret-and-Cobalt enjoyed the breakthrough when after a free kick was initially cleared, Juan Sanabria passed to Luc de Fougerolles to his right in the box and the latter hammered a shot into the back of the net to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.
But the Quakes refused to fold, and in the last minute of stoppage time, Preston Judd curled a ball toward the box that Sanabria deflected in the air. Second-half substitute Jack Jasinski, perfectly positioned on the right side at the edge of the six-yard box, volleyed it past Cabral to equalize late 1-1 and steal a point for San Jose.
