MATCH PREVIEW: Quakes chase history once more in trip north to Toronto FC

Daniel vs. STL

The San Jose Earthquakes are back on the road to face Toronto FC on Saturday as they return to Major League Soccer play. Kickoff from BMO Field is set for 10 a.m. PT and will air globally on Apple TV (English/Spanish), KSFO 810 AM (English) and La Kaliente 1370 AM (Spanish).

The Earthquakes continue to sit atop the Western Conference and Supporters’ Shield standings after a league-record 9-1-0 start in MLS play and now are 11-1-0 across all competitions. They will also be chasing a new record as a win Saturday will break the 2022 Red Bull New York squad’s MLS mark for the most consecutive road wins to start a season (5).

Last time out on Tuesday, the PayPal Park fans were treated to an exhilarating 4-2 comeback win over Minnesota United FC in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Round of 16. Beau Leroux scored the first brace of his career to fuel the Quakes' third consecutive second-half comeback victory across all competitions and their first win over Minnesota in general since July 2024. The result also propelled the Quakes to the U.S. Open Cup Quarterfinals for the second consecutive season under Head Coach Bruce Arena.

In Toronto, the Black and Blue will also be playing their sixth match in the last 13 days, a stretch that has forced considerable rotation, with the starting lineup seeing 11 changes across three MLS regular season fixtures.

“It’s been a rough go over the last couple of weeks,” Arena said. “Hopefully we can hang in there and have a team ready to play on Saturday.”

The clash at BMO Field will mark the first meeting between San Jose and Toronto since July 2022, which ended in a 2-2 draw. The Quakes hold a 6-5-8 overall regular-season record against the Reds.

Meanwhile, TFC is coming off their third loss of the season after falling 2-1 to Atlanta United at home and currently are sixth place in the Eastern Conference at 3-3-4. The Reds feature a pair of U.S. internationals to keep an eye on ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in forward Josh Sargent and defender Walker Zimmerman. In addition, longtime nemesis Daniel Salloi, who has battled San Jose for years as a member of Sporting Kansas City paces them with six goal contributions (3g/3a).

Among those lining up for Toronto will be a familiar last name in backup goalkeeper Adisa De Rosario. His father, Dwayne, won three major trophies as a key cog of the San Jose machine under Frank Yallop (2001 & 2003 MLS Cups, 2005 Supporters’ Shield).

Matchday 11 presents a stern test for a San Jose side amid a busy run of matches, yet the Earthquakes have demonstrated the ability to rise to the occasion time and time again this season. With a historic league start intact, the Quakes will look to maintain their standing atop the Western Conference and Supporters’ Shield standings against a Toronto FC side eager to reverse their recent fortunes.
