CARSON, Calif. — The San Jose Earthquakes fell to the LA Galaxy 1-0 on Wednesday night at Dignity Health Sports Park in the 106th California Clasico across all competitions.
The Earthquakes had the first opportunity to score in the fourth minute when first-time starter Luka Jovanović drew Galaxy goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski off his line and dished to an open Paul Marie in the box, but the Frenchman’s shot was cleared off the line by Jakob Glesnes. Five minutes later, Jamar Ricketts connected with Jovanović just outside the six-yard box, but his ensuing blast was parried away by Marcinkowski. The Quakes again unleashed another shot on target in minute 12 when Jack Jasinski received a pass in the box and belted an attempt for the far post to force a kick save from Marcinkowski. In minute 40, the Galaxy created their first one-on-one chance in the left half-space, but Kyogo Furuhashi curled his attempt wide of the far post. With the first half winding down, Lucas Sanabria was sent off after referee Ramy Touchan presented him with a second yellow card for a hard challenge on Ricketts.
With the Galaxy down to 10 men, San Jose tried to find the breakthrough. Second-half substitute Preston Judd had a pair of chances after coming on at the hour mark, but the first shot was over the crossbar and the second was saved at point-blank range by Marcinkowski. In minute 79, Galaxy midfielder Marco Reus pushed a through ball ahead to Harbor Miller on the right wing, whose subsequent low cross found a streaking Paintsil for the tap-in to give the hosts a 1-0 lead. San Jose searched for an equalizer in the 90th minute when Timo Werner’s cross from the left wing was headed on target by Jasinski, but Marcinkowski batted it away.
