SAN JOSE, Calif. — Daniel Munie’s first-half goal and Angus Gunn’s late heroics in net lifted the San Jose Earthquakes past Houston Dynamo FC 1-0 on Saturday night at PayPal Park in Major League Soccer regular-season play to extend their unbeaten streak to four league matches.
The Earthquakes opened the scoring in minute 38 when Beau Leroux hauled in a Niko Tsakiris corner kick inside the box in the left half-space. He shifted to his left and pushed a low cross for Munie who redirected it from close range past Houston goalkeeper Jonathan Bond to make it 1-0.
After intermission, the Quakes kept their defensive intensity despite three bookings earlier in the game and gave Houston very few opportunities to equalize, much less put anything on target. However, in the 86th minute, the Dynamo would get two chances when Nick Markanich headed the ball on net and Hector Herrera followed up but Gunn shut the door on both, with a kick save to parry the latter shot away. San Jose held on until the final whistle to earn their second consecutive clean sheet against Houston.
San Jose moved up to fourth place in the Western Conference (12-8-5; 41 points), while Houston remained in second (13-8-4, 43 points).

ALL-TIME SERIES: The Quakes ran their unbeaten streak to four vs. Houston Dynamo FC after two draws and two wins in their last four regular-season meetings. In the teams’ first matchup of 2026 just two weeks ago on Aug. 29, San Jose held the Dynamo without a single shot on goal in a 0-0 draw at Houston’s Shell Energy Stadium. In the all-time series with the Dynamo, San Jose is now 12-19-6 (47 GF, 57 GA) and 9-6-5 (20 GF, 36 GA) at home.
ON THE TABLE: The Earthquakes move up to fourth in the Western Conference (12-8-5, 41 points; 44 GF, 36 GA), while Houston is still second (13-8-4, 43 points; 32 GF, 28 GA).

PROGRESS: The Quakes surpassed the 2025 campaign’s league win total (11-15-8) with their 12th victory tonight.
BUY DOMESTIC: The Quakes started seven American players tonight. No team in MLS has averaged more of them in the starting 11 more across all competitions in 2026 than Bruce Arena’s Earthquakes (7.4/game). Arena also started seven former college players tonight; no team in MLS has more of them on the roster (19).
DUDE WIPES DERBY: In a battle of two clubs who share DUDE Wipes as their Back-of-Jersey Partner, the inaugural DUDE Wipes Derby was born, with San Jose taking home a custom-made trophy via aggregate goals (1-0).
CAN’T STOP THE MUNIE: Daniel Munie continued his strong 2026 MLS All-Star campaign by scoring his fifth goal of the league season (and seventh career goal in MLS play) in the 38th minute. He also broke John Doyle’s club record for goals in one season by a defender (four in 2000) and now leads all MLS center backs this season with five goals, one more than Philadelphia’s Neil Pierre.
BEAU KNOWS ASSISTS: Beau Leroux’s 38th-minute assist was his seventh of the league season and 11th career assist in MLS play.
CONNECTED FOREVER: The original Earthquakes MLS franchise (1996-2005) moved to Houston in 2006 and became the Dynamo. When a new ownership group led by current Managing Partner John Fisher (along with plans to build PayPal Park) was secured, a new MLS iteration of the Earthquakes (keeping their history/records intact) was born in 2008.
BOTH SIDES OF THE COIN: Current Dynamo GM Pat Onstad is one of many who enjoyed a decorated playing career for both clubs due to the franchise moving from San Jose to Houston. He first won the 2003 Audi MLS Cup and 2005 Supporters’ Shield along with MLS Goalkeeper of the Year honors both of those seasons with San Jose, before going on to win the 2006 and 2007 Audi MLS Cups with the Dynamo. MLS all-time leading scorer Chris Wondolowski, currently the Quakes’ Under-23 Individual Development Head is another example of a legend who won hardware with both clubs (2005 and 2012 Supporters’ Shields with San Jose, 2006 and 2007 Audi MLS Cups with Houston).
DOWN THE STREET: Houston GK Blake Gillingham was born in San Jose and attended Bellarmine College Prep, just a five-minute drive from PayPal Park. His older brother Brandon even played for the Burlingame Dragons, the Quakes’ now defunct Under-23 team in the old Premier Development League (now USL League Two). Houston midfielder and Hayward native Gilberto Rivera, who was an unused substitute, returned to the Bay Area. The former San Jose State University star was teammates with the Quakes’ Beau Leroux in college before being selected in the 2026 MLS SuperDraft.
TED LASSO NIGHT: The Earthquakes and Apple TV teamed up for a special Ted Lasso Night amid the show’s new season, giving thousands of fans iconic “Believe” posters and welcoming an army of Ted Lasso character lookalikes.

EARTHQUAKES HEAD COACH BRUCE ARENA
On matching up with Houston Dynamo FC tonight:
“It was pretty clear from the start that Houston wanted to try to play behind our back line. I thought [Daniel] Munie, [Jack] Jasinski and [Dave] Romney did a great job there, and our goalkeeper covering space behind them. So we were pretty consistent there. I think there might have been just one time in the entire game where they actually got behind us and had an opportunity to get a goal, so our guys did a good job.”
“Give Houston credit. Houston played well, and they were hard to play against for 90 minutes. They battled. They fought hard. They pressured the ball. They won a lot of balls in the middle third of the field. Eduard [Löwen] did a good job. He's going to continue to improve his match fitness and be a real positive factor for us as we close out the season.”
On goalkeeper Angus Gunn’s performance since joining the team following his run with the Scotland National Team in the 2026 FIFA World Cup:
“It takes every international player in this league some time to adjust and get acclimated. Angus obviously played in the World Cup, but he hadn't been playing on a regular basis for probably two years at the club level. So we've seen over the last three or four games there's been improvement. We knew he'd be a good goalkeeper, and it takes time. That's all I can say. But tonight he did a great job.”

“The best rivalries in our league are the California teams. They’re tremendous rivalries. The one with the Galaxy has been there since 1996. It's a tremendous rivalry. We developed a great one with LAFC and San Diego [FC]. Next Saturday will be another special one as well. I think maybe some people are missing the boat on how significant these rivalries are and how positive it is for the league, and hopefully they can continue. It'll be a big game. They're a very talented team, and they're going to be a difficult team to play against.”
EARTHQUAKES GOALKEEPER ANGUS GUNN
On his double save in the second half to seal the clean sheet:
“The first one was a point-blank header, and it was more just about positioning and getting my leg out. Then I was on the floor, and I saw the guy pulling his leg back. I thought, ‘I don’t really have time to get up,’ so I just kind of gambled that he was going to try to hit it into that corner. I put my leg out and managed to save it, which, when it comes off, is a great feeling. Obviously, to get us a few points is massive moving forward.”
On his evolution and growth since joining the club:
“I wasn’t expecting to come in and it be easy. I wasn’t surprised at the quality when I came here. From the first day of training, the guys were technically and physically as good as back in Europe, so I wasn’t expecting to come in and be unbelievable straight away. It took a little bit of time to settle, not just professionally, but personally as well. So I just kept my head down, worked hard in training, believed in myself, and eventually the hard work paid off.”
On the team’s resilience after a tough two months and extending their unbeaten streak to four:
“Just working every day, getting used to playing with each other and playing with the guys, not just the defense, but the whole team, to be honest. Obviously, in possession and out of possession, things don’t just happen like that. You have to work, and we work very hard on the training pitch, even when the results haven’t been going our way. Obviously, we’ve been disappointed and down, but the group has always stuck together and worked hard every week. I think you can sort of see that coming through now. The last four or five games, we’ve performed really well, and we’re looking strong at a good time for the rest of the season.”
On preparing for PRIME TIME next Saturday against LAFC at Levi’s Stadium:
“To be honest, I’ve not thought about it at all yet. We’ve been focused on this game, and each game comes quickly, so we’ve not been looking too far ahead. Obviously, it’s going to be a great event for the club and all the fans, and hopefully they come out and enjoy it. After this tough period, I think we’re going to have a few days to relax and switch off a little bit because it’s not just been tough physically, but mentally as well. When you have so many games, it’s tough. We’ll rest and recover mentally and physically, then come back in on Tuesday and focus on that game and look forward to it. We had a similar event at Stanford early on when I came in, and that was a great occasion. Hopefully, we can get a lot of energy into the stadium and carry on this good run.”
