Quakes II

SAN JOSE, Calif. — San Jose Earthquakes II fell to Tacoma Defiance 2-1 on Saturday night at Spartan Soccer Complex in MLS NEXT Pro regular-season play.

After a scoreless first half, the hosts opened the scoring in the 64th minute with a successful penalty kick by midfielder Edwyn Mendoza. The penalty was awarded to San Jose when Tacoma Defiance center back Jasper Winslow fouled Quakes II forward Zach Bohane as he ran the ball into the 18-yard box. The visitors nearly pulled one back in the 73rd minute when Tacoma midfielder Matthew Christopher Bell took a shot to the bottom right corner of the net, but San Jose goalkeeper Nate Crockford caught the ball with a diving stop.

Tacoma found the equalizer via a successful penalty kick by striker Mark Bronnick in the 83rd minute. The penalty kick was awarded to the visitors after a foul by San Jose right back Jacob Heisner on Tacoma midfielder Xavi Gnaulati. In the 90th minute, Tacoma took the lead when midfielder Mark Cian O’Neill headed in a corner kick from right wing back Charlie Gaffney.

At the conclusion of the match, Quakes II moves to 10th place in the MLS NEXT Pro Western Conference and remains in fifth place in the Pacific Division (9-10-6). Tacoma Defiance remains in seventh place in the MLSNP Western Conference and fourth place in the Pacific Division (11-11-4).

Quakes II continues the homestand and faces Ventura County FC on Wednesday, Sept. 9. Kickoff from Spartan Soccer Complex will take place at 7:30 p.m. PT and will be broadcast via OneFootball, as well as on MLSNEXTPro.com.
