MLS TEAM OF THE WEEK: Tommy Thompson shines in Columbus win

Tommy Thompson - 2017 - TOTW

CalTrain isn’t the only locomotive stopping by Avaya Stadium these days. On Saturday, the “TomThom” hype train also made a stop in San Jose.

Quakes midfielder Tommy Thompson has been growing in his performances as of late, and Saturday was no different. The Quakes’ first Homegrown Player had a stellar showing against Columbus Crew SC, playing a pivotal role in his side’s 2-1 win.

Thompson recorded the highest passing accuracy of all starters in the match (95.1%) and set up Chris Wondolowski’s game-winning goal in the 56th minute. The midfielder made a run into the box, beating two defenders before laying off a diagonal ball from the goal line that Wondo tapped home. It was his third assist this season in league play and fifth across all competitions. He nearly got on the scoreboard himself in stoppage time, but his left-footed rocket struck the upper left corner of the post.

Also included on the bench this week was forward Marco Ureña. The Costa Rica international hustled all night and was rewarded for it in the 42nd minute. Ureña opened the scoring after getting on the end of a Shea Salinas through ball in the box, losing his mark and slotting past Zack Steffen from a tight angle.
