SAN JOSE, Calif. –  The San Jose Earthquakes have acquired Argentine defensive midfielder Eric Remedi from Atlanta United FC in exchange for $200,000 of 2022 General Allocation Money (GAM) plus additional GAM for player retention and performance. Remedi, who became a Green Card holder in 2020, will not occupy an international slot on the Quakes’ roster.

“Eric is a player we’ve followed for many years and we’re excited he’ll now be representing San Jose in a key position of need,” said Earthquakes general manager Jesse Fioranelli. “His significant contributions with Atlanta have helped the team achieve success in a number of different competitions. Being able to structure a cap-friendly trade for a 25-year-old of his caliber with domestic success and three years of experience in Major League Soccer represented a unique opportunity for our club.”

Remedi, 25, spent the last two and a half seasons with Atlanta United FC, leading the club to a trio of trophies: MLS Cup (2018), U.S. Open Cup (2019) and Campeones Cup (2019). Remedi made 49 starts in 59 total regular season appearances with Atlanta since joining midseason in 2018, tallying one goal and three assists. Additionally, he made 19 appearances across MLS Cup Playoffs, U.S. Open Cup and Concacaf Champions League play, tallying two goals and two assists in those competitions.

During the team’s championship run in 2018, Remedi played every minute of the postseason, helping Atlanta outscore its opponents 9-2 in their five matches while contributing a goal and an assist.  He also appeared in all five matches of Atlanta’s U.S. Open Cup run in 2019, making four starts and earning Man of the Match honors in their 2-0 semifinal win over Orlando after scoring the game-winning goal and later adding an assist.

Prior to joining Atlanta, Remedi competed for Argentina’s Banfield for three years, making his first team debut in June 2015 under Quakes head coach Matias Almeyda. With Banfield, Remedi tallied two assists in 55 league appearances, as well as making four appearances in Copa Libertadores and one appearance in Copa Sudamericana.
