NEWS: Earthquakes midfielder Vako named MLS Player of the Week

SAN JOSE, Calif. – San Jose Earthquakes midfielder Vako has been named the MLS Player of the Week for Week 17. Vako scored two goals in San Jose’s 2-0 win over the Houston Dynamo on Wednesday, June 26 before registering one goal and an assist in a 3-0 victory over the LA Galaxy on Saturday, June 29. He tallied the game-winning goal in both matches and helped extend San Jose’s unbeaten streak to six (4-0-2).


In addition to Vako, defender Tommy Thompson and head coach Matias Almeyda were also named to the MLS Team of the Week following the club’s success in Week 17. San Jose is one of two teams with three honorees (MIN).


Thompson was selected to the Team of the Week after helping the Quakes post back-to-back shutouts and scoring his first goal of the season on Saturday. It marks his second MLS Team of the Week selection this year (Week 15). Almeyda was selected to the Team of the Week for the second time this season (Week 6).


San Jose has gone 6-1-4 since April 20 and has trailed at any point in just one of their last 11 contests. The Quakes have climbed to fifth in the Western Conference with a 7-6-4 record.
