Earlier this month, former Earthquakes midfielder Richard Mulrooney was inducted into the Tennessee State Soccer Association Hall of Fame. The Memphis native is the first professional player to be inducted into the TSSA Hall of Fame, as prior to Mulrooney’s induction, all others were inducted as coaches.
Mulrooney spent six seasons with the Earthquakes from 1999 to 2004 and played a part in the club’s two MLS Cup winning seasons in 2001 and 2003. Mulrooney currently stands sixth in games played (163), second in assists (44) and first in game winning assists (14) on the club’s all-time leaders list. He was also named the Earthquakes’ Most Valuable Player in 2000 after leading the team with assists (9) and games started (29).
During his six year run with the Earthquakes, Mulrooney was called up to the United States Men’s National team and made 14 appearances from 2001 to 2004. His most notable year in U.S. Soccer was in 2003 where he played in the CONCACAF Gold Cup Squad that finished third.
Mulrooney has served as the head coach of the University of Memphis Men’s Soccer team since 2014.
