On Thursday, the San Jose Earthquakes announced the signing of Slovakian midfielder Jan Gregus. Gregus was a Designated Player for Minnesota United FC over the past three seasons and was selected by San Jose in Stage 2 of last month’s Re-Entry Draft.

Gregus answered a few questions about his path to San Jose:

SJEQ: How did your first opportunity to come to Major League Soccer take place?

Gregus: “The first notice came from management and my coach when I was playing in Copenhagen in Denmark. It was an unknown step for me, and I didn't know what to expect, but it was good decision.”

SJEQ: After three seasons in MLS, what are your impressions of the league?

Gregus: “MLS is growing very fast with loads of quality teams. It’s also very even competitively.”

SJEQ: Do you remember your goal in San Jose in 2020 and what do you think of the budding rivalry between the two teams?

Gregus: “Of course I remember! We played several great games against San Jose when I was with Minnesota and now I hope it to be the other way around.”

SJEQ: When you found out you would not be retained by Minnesota, was staying in MLS your preferred choice?

Gregus: “Yes, I really like the United States and MLS in particular. I had a few other opportunities, but I chose to stay here.”

SJEQ: Do you have any thoughts about playing for Matias Almeyda?

Gregus: “We had an opportunity to talk on the phone and had a really good chat. Obviously, he had a great career as a football player, and I hope we can be successful together.”
