sjearthquakes.com: Cuéntanos sobre tu trayectoria. ¿De dónde vienes y dónde has trabajado?
Fabio Alvarez: “Mi nombre es Fabio Álvarez y tengo 50 años. Nací en un pueblo en Argentina que se llama Macachin que está en la Pampa. Me recibí como Kinesiólogo con mi licenciado de la Universidad Nacional de Córdoba en el interior de Argentina. A partir de 1993 y 1994 me ha recibido. Me voy a trabajar al fútbol en las divisiones de ascenso ya en una empresa de Gatic de adidas - una clínica que era para deportistas que tenía convenio con el club. A partir de 1994 y 1995 empezó mi relación con el fútbol. Empiezo a trabajar en los clubes de ascenso: San Telmo, después otro club Ferro Carril Oeste que salimos campeones y ascendimos al Nacional B. A partir del 2005, me fui a trabajar en el club Atlético de River Plate. En 2013 o 2014 estuve por dos años con la selección nacional de Paraguay. Estuvimos en la Copa América de Chile y en la Copa América Centenario de los EE.UU. Regreso a River Plate y después tuve un año en otro club de Argentina que se llama Rosario Central. Estuve por un año allí. Retorno a River y bueno el ante año pasado vengo a trabajar con Matias a Chivas. Hoy estoy acá en San Jose.”
SJEQ: Tell us about your career path. Where are you from and where have you worked?
FA: “My name is Fabio Alvarez and I am 50 years old. I was born in a town in Argentina called Macachin which is in La Pampa. I received my Kinesiology license from the Universidad Nacional de Córdoba, which is in the middle of the country, in 1993 or 1994. I started working in soccer in the lower divisions with an adidas clinic for athletes that also worked with the clubs. In 1994 or 1995, my relationship with soccer started. I started working with the lower division clubs: San Telmo and later another club called Ferro Carril Oeste; we won the championship and were promoted to Nacional B. In 2005, I went to River Plate. In 2013 or 2014, I was with the Paraguay National Team for two years. We were in the Copa America in Chile and in the United States. Afterwards, I returned to River Plate and then I was with another club in Argentina called Rosario Central for a year. I returned to River and the year before last I went work with Matias at Chivas. Now I am in San Jose.”
SJEQ: ¿Cómo conociste a Matías?
FA: “A Matías lo conocí en el River Plate en el año, si no recuero mal, 2008 cuando él retornó al fútbol. Él había abandonado él fútbol, había dejado el fútbol a los 30 años. A los 33 o 34 regresó a River. Yo estaba trabajando como Kinesiólogo allí. Gorosito era el técnico. Es un exjugador de Argentina y un exjugador de River. Lo convencieron a regresar al fútbol a los 33 o 34 años.”
SJEQ: How did you meet Matias?
FA: “I met Matias in River Plate in 2008, if I remember correctly, when he returned to soccer. He stopped playing when he was 30 and when he was 33 or 34, he came back to River. I was working as a Kinesiologist there. The head coach as that time was Gorosito, a former player for the Argentina National Team and for River. He convinced Matias to return to soccer when he was 33 or 34.”
SJEQ: ¿Por qué tomaste la decisión de venir a San Jose?
FA: “El reto mío arrancó hace dos años cuando decidí irme de Argentina con mis 49 años. Ya estaba un poco cansado de la variable de los técnicos. Tuve la suerte de haber trabajado en River con Matías - él como técnico y yo como Kinesiólogo. Creíamos una buena relación, la cual duró el tiempo. Matías se fue a trabajar con los otros equipos en otros lugares, pero siempre sabíamos como estaba uno a otro. Cuando apareció la posibilidad de venir Chivas,había unos cuantos lesionados y me pidió si podía asistirlo. Salió bien y después de eso me ofreció la oportunidad de trabajar con él. Primero, lo considero una buena persona. Lo considero como una persona que tiene valores muy parecidos a los valores que tengo yo. A mi edad, estaba medio cansado de estar en un club donde cada año, cada dos años había cambiado el técnico. Decidí trabajar donde quiero. Tenía el privilegio en este momento de elegir trabajar con gente amiga. No dudé. Así que viene ya de Chivas con la idea de trabajar un par de años más con él – tres, cuatro años – lo que sea – y salió esta posibilidad de San Jose y también había otras. La ciudad ya lo conocía porque había venido con Chivas aquí a jugar. Siempre me había gustado. Es un lindo desafío. Es un proyecto que se arranca de cero y donde uno puede llegar a volcar un poco de experiencia. En el caso mío, tengo 30 años de experiencia con el fútbol. Aparte estar con él y con este grupo hermano que se ha formado, yo digo que trabajar en lo que uno le gusta no es trabajar, sino disfrutar. Más, cuando está con gente amiga que conoces tiene otro valor y otro disfrute.”
SJEQ: Why did you decide to come to San Jose?
FA: “My challenge started a couple years ago when I decided to leave Argentina at 49 years old. I was getting a bit tired of all the coaching changes. I was lucky to have worked with Matías at River when he was the head coach and I was the Kinesiologist. We built a good relationship that has stood the test of time. He worked with other teams in other places, but we kept in touch and knew how each other was doing. When the opportunity to go to Chivas presented itself, it was when there were a lot of injured players and Matias asked me if I could help out. It went well and afterwards he offered me a job. Firstly, I consider him a great person. I think of him as a person who has very similar values as I do. At my age, I was kind of tired of there being a new coach every year or every two years. I decided to work where I want. I had the privilege in that moment of choosing to work with friends. I didn’t have any doubt. I went to Chivas with the idea of working a couple more years with him, three or four whatever it may be, and then came this opportunity and others. I already knew San Jose because we came here with Chivas. I have always liked it. It seemed like a good challenge. It is a project we can start from the ground up and where you can give your experience. In my case, I have 30 years of experience working in soccer. Aside from working with Matias and the group that he has formed, I always say that working in what you are passionate about isn’t work, it’s pleasure. Working with people you are friends with is another positive.”
SJEQ: ¿En qué manera puedes ayudar al equipo?
FA: “Yo siempre digo en el fútbol hay muchos grises. En el caso mío y en el caso de Matías, y con el grupo con el cual contamos, somos de blanco y negro. Tenemos una manera de ser que es bastante frontal. En lo que es mi área, yo creo que el club o el equipo o en este caso los jugadores, les voy a ofrecer lo que he ofrecido a Matías estos tiempos que trabajaba con él: mi 31 casi 30 años de experiencia de hacer siempre lo mismo. Es como que uno ya tiene una manera de trabajar y una experiencia que no te va a dar el libro sino te va a dar los 30 años que he trabajado todo diario con este tipo de lecciones o trabajo. Creo que llegó el momento que los años, si bien pesan, pero también te dan un plus y eso creo que yo puedo portar acá.”
SJEQ: What can you bring to the team?
FA: “I have always said that in soccer there are a lot of gray areas. In my case and in Matias’ case and the group that we are part of, we are black and white. We have a way of being very direct. In my area, I think the club or the team, or in this case the players, I can offer them what I’ve offered to Matías in the years that I have worked with him: my 30 years of experience of always doing the same. I already have a way of working and you can’t get my experience from a book. I have 30 years in which I have worked every day with these types of injuries. I think that over time, the years can be tough, but they also give you an advantage and I think I can prove that here.”
SJEQ: ¿Qué conoces de la MLS? ¿Cuál era tu impresión de la liga antes de unirte a los Quakes?
FA: “En Argentina la MLS no se puede seguir como las ligas europeas, pero en Argentina tenemos conocimiento porque muchos jugadores han venido aquí. En la época que yo trabajaba en adidas, había muchos jugadores, como por ejemplo Javi Morales, que jugaron acá. Son jugadores que yo venía o se iban a atender conmigo en Argentina. A través de eso, tenía conocimiento de la liga. El año pasado cuando venimos jugar acá con México. La cercanía de ambos países te hace sentir un poco más cerca. Sobre todo, después cuando tuvo la posibilidad de jugar con Chivas la Concachampion, allí se vio un poco más el progreso que ha tenido esta liga. Yo tenía un recuerdo de hace 10 años de la liga, pero cuando te tocaron enfrentar a equipos como Seattle, Toronto – el cual el equipo Toronto que le ganó en la final, eliminó a América y a Tigres. Realmente se ve muchísimo crecimiento a nivel liga. Me gusta la liga y veo acá en San Jose una muy buena posibilidad de hacer una huesa en este club y esta liga.”
SJEQ: What was your impression of MLS before joining San Jose?
FA: “In Argentina, it is not as easy to follow MLS like the European leagues, but we know about MLS because a lot of players come here. When I worked for adidas, there were a lot of players like Javi Morales, for example, that came here to play. The previous year when we came here with Mexico, the proximity of the two countries made you feel closer. Above all, when Chivas was playing in the Concacaf Champions League, you could see the progress that the league has had. I remembered how the league was 10 years ago, but when we played Seattle, Toronto – we beat Toronto in the final and they had eliminated Club America and Tigres leading up to that – you could really see the progress of the league. I like the league and here in San Jose it is a good opportunity to make a mark on the team and the league.”
SJEQ: ¿Por qué este grupo es tan especial?
FA: “Digo que es especial porque son muy hermanos. Son gente que le da prioridad a cosas que en el fútbol se deja mucho al lado. La parte humana es muy importante para todo el grupo. Realmente, a cada lado que han ido y hemos ido, se ha creado una identidad. Se ha creado una familia de lo que se trata de cuidar. Yo digo que lo más importante del paso de Matías y o su cuerpo técnico por River o por Banfield o por Chivas, es que dejan una huesa humana muy fuerte, muy marcada. Tienen los valores y éticos muy fuertes.”
SJEQ: Why is this group so special?
FA: “I think this group is special because they are like brothers. They are a group that pays attention to things that in soccer that generally get overlooked. The human side is so important for all of this group. Really, in every place that they have been to or we have been at, an identity was created. They have created a family that they try to care for and spread. I say that the most important thing that Matias or the technical staff have done in their time at River, Banfield or Chivas is that they have left a very strong and notable mark. They have strong values and ethics. They have a way of seeing soccer differently from the rest.”
