Renato Bustamante, a Peruvian-American coach and former professional player, brings a wealth of experience at the youth, collegiate, and professional levels to the San Jose Earthquakes Academy.
Originally from Lima, Peru, Renato moved to Chicago as a teenager before beginning his collegiate playing career at Truman College (NJCAA), where he was team captain, an All-Region selection, and an All-American nominee. He later transferred to Fresno Pacific University (NCAA Division II), where he captained the team, earned All-Region honors, was named to the All-American First Team, won two Pacwest conference titles and helped lead the program to national recognition by reaching the NCAA National Tournament for the first time in program history.
Following college, Renato signed professionally with the Tampa Bay Rowdies (NASL) and went on to play with Fresno FC (USL Championship) and Central Valley Fuego (USL League One).
Renato transitioned into coaching while completing his B.A. in Physical Education with a minor in Coaching from Fresno Pacific University. He has coached across all levels of the game, including youth, college, and the professional ranks. His youth coaching background includes time with Odyssey Soccer Club(NPL - U16 Head Coach), South Valley United (Director of Coaching), and Santa Barbara Soccer Club (MLS NEXT – U16 Head Coach). At the collegiate level, he served as Head Coach at College of the Sequoias, where he guided the program to its first-ever playoff appearance and conference title, in addition to assistant roles at Clovis Community College, UC Irvine (Division I), and Westmont College (Division II – Winning the NCCAA National Championship in 2023).
Most recently, Renato was the First Assistant Coach for Spokane Velocity in USL League One, helping guide the team to a League One Final appearance in 2024.
He is fluent in English, Spanish, and Portuguese, and holds a USSF National A License (pending).
