Earthquakes Youth Academy Update

Nike International Friendlies Champions
San Jose Earthquakes Academy midfielder Angel Heredia and the U.S. U17 National Team were crowned the Nike International Friendlies Champions on Sunday. Heredia wore the captain’s armband in a 2-2 draw against France in the United States’ first match of the tournament on Nov. 30. In the Americans’ second match, Heredia came off the bench in the 54th minute and was on the field as the team scored the game-winning goal in the 88th minute to defeat Turkey 2-1 on Dec. 2. The U.S. topped Brazil 3-1 in the final game of the tournament in front of a capacity crowd at the Premier Sports Campus in Lakewood Ranch, Fla. on Sunday to take the championship.


Showcase Tournament
San Jose’s Academy teams will wrap up the Showcase Tournament in Sarasota, Fla. this afternoon. Every club in the country was invited and randomly paired against other teams to play in a series of three games. The Earthquakes Academy first faced the South Carolina United Battery on Friday, Dec. 2. The U16s lost 2-0 and the U18s won 2-1 with goals from Julio Cervantes (Oakland, Calif.) in the 78th minute and Hector Herrera (San Jose, Calif./Leland High School) in the 90th minute.


On Saturday, Dec. 3 the teams faced Georgia United. The U18s lost 1-0 and the U16s lost 3-1, with a goal from Elisama Padilla (Pittsburg, Calif./Clayton Valley High School) in the 43rd minute. The Earthquakes Academy played their final match of the tournament on Monday, Dec. 5 against Andromeda FC. The U16s won 3-1 and the U18s lost 3-1.

Misc. Notes

Earthquakes Sign Steven Lenhart, Trade for Shea Salinas
The Earthquakes signed forward Steven Lenhart to an extension and acquired midfielder Shea Salinas from Vancouver Whitecaps FC for allocation money on Wednesday, Nov. 30.


Lenhart scored five goals and had three assists in 2011, his first season with the Quakes. He started 13 of his 14 games and played a key role during San Jose’s six-game unbeaten streak from May 11 through June 11. Meanwhile, Salinas was the first and only player taken by San Jose in MLS SuperDraft during the club’s 2008 expansion season. He spent the last two seasons with the Philadelphia Union (2009) and Whitecaps FC (2010).


Earthquakes Acquire Jean Alexandre from Real Salt Lake
On Thursday, Dec. 1 the Earthquakes acquired Haitian international midfielder Jean Alexandre from Real Salt Lake in exchange for San Jose’s first round pick in the 2012 MLS Supplemental Draft. The former No. 12 overall SuperDraft selection set career highs in games played (19), games started (nine), minutes (703) and scored his first career MLS goal in 2011, his third season in the league.


Earthquakes Acquire International Player Slot in Exchange for Bobby Convey
The club acquired an additional international player slot from Sporting Kansas City in exchange for midfielder Bobby Convey on Friday, Dec. 2. Sporting Kansas City will receive its international player slot back on Jan. 1, 2013.


New Stadium Luxury Suites On Sale
The Earthquakes’ one-of-a kind luxury suites for the club’s new stadium went on sale to Season Ticket Holders on Friday, Dec. 2. Unlike any other experience in American professional sports, the suites will place fans directly next to the field with private bar and lounge access just yards from the action. Suites include: 17 seats with six additional tickets for all stadium events, in-suite catering, private bar and lounge area with a High Definition television. Suite holders will also have the ability to customize the interior and will enjoy year-round access to the suite for corporate events for client meetings. 2012 Season Opener
For the fourth consecutive season, the Earthquakes will host a game on MLS Opening Day on March 10, 2012 at Buck Shaw Stadium. Times, opponents, and national broadcast information for these games will be included in the entire regular season schedule which will be announced upon its completion in the coming weeks. Each club will play 34 games in the 2012 MLS Regular Season.


Goalkeeper David Bingham to Tour Netherlands with Generation adidas Squad
Earthquakes goalkeeper David Bingham began his second international trip of the offseason on Monday as part of the Generation adidas Tour in the Netherlands. The tour lasts from Dec. 5-15 and gives 18 emerging MLS stars the chance to train at the world-renowned Ajax Academy in Amsterdam and compete in friendly matches against Ajax Reserves as well as Dutch second-division clubs FC Volendum and Almere City FC.


U14 Pre-Academy Regional Development Schools
The Earthquakes will establish seven U14 Pre-Academy Regional Development Schools around Northern California as they continue to build their youth system, the club announced on Wednesday, Nov. 30. Locations will include Central Valley, East Bay, Marin, Mountain View, Sacramento, San Jose and Tracy. Each training center will be operated by the Earthquakes and will compete in an Earthquakes Pre-Academy League against affiliated programs. Earthquakes Defender Bobby Burling Selected in 2011 MLS Expansion Draft
Earthquakes defender Bobby Burling was selected in the 2011 MLS Expansion Draft by the Montreal Impact on Nov. 23. Burling appeared in 48 games in three seasons with the Earthquakes. He scored one goal and had one assist during that time.

Earthquakes Hold No. 6 Overall Pick in SuperDraft
The San Jose Earthquakes will be sixth on the board when the 2012 MLS SuperDraft takes place in Kansas City on Jan. 12. The expansion Montreal Impact hold the No. 1 overall pick for the national televised event on ESPN2. This year’s draft has been reduced to two rounds. The Earthquakes have picked within the top-six in nine previous MLS drafts. The club’s last top-six pick was Ike Opara at No. 3 overall in 2010. San Jose has picked out of the No. 6 slot twice, selecting Luchi Gonzalez in 2002 and Todd Dunivant in 2003.
