Earthquakes reserves host Whitecaps FC on April 8

Jean Marc Alexandre 3/27/12 Reserve Match 2

The San Jose Earthquakes reserves will host Vancouver Whitecaps FC in MLS Reserve League action on Sunday, April 8. Kickoff at the Earthquakes Training Facility in San Jose is set for 11 a.m.

The Quakes reserves (1-0-0, 3 pts.) opened their 10-game slate by edging the Portland Timbers, 1-0, in the 2012 Reserve League opener for both sides at the Earthquakes Training Facility on March 27.

Jean-Marc Alexandre struck a left-footed shot from distance for the game’s lone goal in the 53rd minute, with assists going to Alan Gordon and Anthony Ampaipitakwong. David Bingham made four saves in preserving the shutout in goal. Center back Jason Hernandez captained the side, with the match also marking Gordon’s return to competitive action after multiple surgeries had kept him out at length.

The Vancouver Whitecaps FC reserves (0-0-1, 1 pt.) played to a 1-1 home draw with Seattle Sounders FC at the University of British Columbia on March 26. Sounders FC clung to a 1-0 advantage thanks to a 72nd-minute goal by Alex Caskey, but ‘Caps defender Carlyle Mitchell rose high to head home a left-sided cross by Omar Salgado in second-half stoppage time to share the points.

Following Easter Sunday’s home contest, the Quakes reserves will be idle for a month before facing their first road match at the LA Galaxy in Carson, Calif., on Tuesday, May 8, at 11 a.m.

Future home dates for the Earthquakes reserves are May 14, Aug. 12 and Sept. 4. All home matches are scheduled to kick off at 11 a.m. at the Earthquakes Training Facility (1125 Coleman Avenue). Reserve League games in San Jose are open to the public and free of charge.
