SAN JOSE, Calif. - San Jose Earthquakes midfielder Shea Salinas will undergo surgery on Wednesday to repair a fractured left clavicle suffered in Saturday's match against the New York Red Bulls.
Salinas injured his clavicle after a takedown by Red Bulls midfielder Rafa Marquez in the box on a corner kick in the 42nd minute. The 25-year-old said on a conference call Tuesday morning that he felt a pop when Marquez drove him to the ground and then heard a ringing in his head. He is expected to miss 6-8 weeks following a surgical procedure performed by Dr. Michael Oberlander at the Sequoia Surgical Pavilion in Walnut Creek on Wednesday.
The speedy winger started each of San Jose's first six games, scoring one goal and notching two assists in the process.
Earthquakes defender Victor Bernardez was also injured in the same sequence from a separate incident. The center back sprained his left medial collateral ligament, landing awkwardly after challenging Red Bulls goalkeeper Ryan Meara for a 50-50 ball near the goal. He is expected to miss 4-6 weeks.
The Honduran started each of San Jose's first six games and played a key role at center back for a revitalized back line that has only allowed four goals - three in the run of play - in 2012.
