What does the announcement of NYCFC mean for the San Jose Earthquakes?

Big news broke out of Major League Soccer headquarters in New York City this morning. The much-anticipated announcement of the league's 20th team, New York City FC, hit the soccer (and digital) world by storm.

Expected to start play in 2015, New York City FC spurs from a partnership between the English Premier League's Manchester City and Major League Baseball's New York Yankees. With a stadium not yet built, the club will have an interim venue as it begins plans to have its own in New York City.

We caught up with Earthquakes President Dave Kaval on his thoughts about the new expansion team, what it means to Major League Soccer, and more specifically, the San Jose Earthquakes:

On having a 20th team added to the league:

"I think it's very exciting that we have a new 20th team in the league. Having Manchester City and the Yankees as partners, those are the biggest brands in sports. So, them partnering with MLS - I think it's just a great day for the league."

On what the 20th team means for the San Jose Earthquakes:

"It means a lot of high profile players and high profile teams in the league that we can beat up on. We've done that with the Galaxy and the Red Bulls. The more the merrier."

There you have it, Quakes fans. The more the merrier, the bigger the better.
