BALTIMORE, Md. - The San Jose Earthquakes selected Generation adidas goalkeeper Andrew Tarbell from Clemson University with the eighth overall selection and Notre Dame midfielder Patrick Hodan with the 28th overall selection in the 2016 Major League Soccer SuperDraft, presented by adidas, at the Baltimore Convention Center.

"We thought Andrew was the best goalkeeper available and we are happy to bring him to San Jose," said Earthquakes general manager John Doyle. "We have an excellent number one and two in David Bingham and Bryan Meredith. Now we have Andrew to add to the competition at that position. Patrick had a good college career at a very good school so he has a good pedigree. He has goals in him - we've seen that at college level. We're looking forward to seeing what both Andrew and Patrick can do."

Tarbell, 22, played four seasons at Clemson, appearing in 56 games (55 starts) in his collegiate career. A 2015 NSCAA All-America Second Team and All-ACC First Team selection, Tarbell allowed just 22 goals in 24 games, while keeping nine clean sheets. As a senior, he led Clemson to 17 wins, tied for fourth most in school history, and an appearance in the College Cup Final. He was also named to the NCAA College Cup All-Tournament Team and the Top Drawer Soccer Postseason Best XI Second Team.

"I think he's a good goalkeeper," said Earthquakes head coach Dominic Kinnear. "He has a bright future and his GA status made him even more attractive to us. We felt he would be a great option for us."

In 2014, Tarbell was named to the All-ACC Third Team, the ACC All-Tournament Team and Clemson's Dean's List. He was also named the team's Newcomer of the Year in 2013.

Tarbell graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering and is currently in the U.S. U-23 National Team pool.

"I can't wait to meet the fans and play in front of them," said Tarbell. "I'm excited to get to know people in and around the community and be part of the San Jose culture."

Hodan, 22, was a standout player for the University of Notre Dame for four years. He made 51 starts in 87 total appearances, scoring 29 goals and adding 19 assists. In addition to being named an NSCAA Second Team All-South Region selection, he was also named Second Team All-ACC and the CoSIDA Academic All-American of the Year in 2015.

In 2014, Hodan was the ACC Offensive Player of the Year. In addition, he was named First Team All-American, First Team All-ACC, Soccer America MVP Second Team and was a MAC Hermann Trophy Semifinalist, recognizing the best collegiate player in the nation.
