Training Report: Quick turnaround as Quakes shift focus to Houston

Following back-to-back road contests, the Earthquakes returned to the training field Monday to prep for their first home game in May. With a short turnaround from Saturday’s match at Seattle, some players endured more rigorous training than others and an injured player made his return in their small-sided scrimmage.

On-Field Highlight
After the game Saturday, players who logged heavy minutes did some light training, while the rest of the team played a small game. Midfielder Cordell Cato joined in the action after missing the Earthquakes first 10 games due to a right hamstring injury.
Off-Field Highlight
Holidays can be tough when you are a professional athlete, but several Earthquakes players still found ways to do something special for their moms for Mother’s Day. Midfielder Tommy Thompson teamed up with his three siblings and father to create a video montage to tell his mom how much they appreciate her. Goalkeeper Andrew Tarbell also took advantage of modern technology, using FaceTime to talk to his mother who lives across the country.

:
How did it feel to make your first career MLS start?
Matheus Silva: “It was great. It was a great atmosphere. The team did well motivating me. It felt great.”
SJEQ:What’s it like being the youngest player on the team?
MS: “It can be good and it can be tough. From my experience so far, it’s been great. All the teammates they’ve all been great to me, helping me out, whether I have to do better or whether I have to keep up, so it’s been pretty good so far. I like it.”
SJEQ:Which teammates have you learned the most from?
MS: “I’ve learned a lot from Clarence [Goodson]. He always tells me in practice whether I’m good, hanging out with the boys how to act, how to behave. Also Victor Bernardez has been a good guy that I look up to.”
SJEQ:What’s the next career goal you want to achieve not that you’ve got your first start under your belt?
MS: “Just to keep up, keep getting better, keep making my family proud, my teammates, my coach and keep getting better. That’s my goal.”
