Last Game vs. Timbers
Earthquakes 0, Portland Timbers 1; June 1, 2016; Providence Park in Portland, Oregon
The San Jose Earthquakes fell to the Portland Timbers 1-0 at Providence Park. The club welcomed back defender Jordan Stewart, who made his first MLS start since suffering an injury last August. Less than three minutes into the match, forward Quincy Amarikwa nearly put the road-side ahead. A failed clearance attempt saw the ball pop straight into the air and Amarikwa was the first to it, heading the ball goalward. The shot attempt was saved with a reaction save by goalkeeper Jake Gleeson. Portland took the lead in the 11th minute. Midfielder Diego Valeri whipped in a free kick and Liam Ridgewell’s looping header at the far post found the back of the net. In first half stoppage time, the Timbers went down to 10 men when Dairon Asprilla was ejected for elbowing Stewart. San Jose nearly took immediate advantage of the extra man two minutes into the second half. Amarikwa beat two defenders before passing to Shea Salinas inside the penalty area. Salinas was able to keep his first-timed shot down, but it was punched away by the Timbers goalkeeper. The Quakes pressed on in search of an equalizer throughout the duration of the second half, holding Portland without a single shot or corner kick, but couldn’t break through to draw level.

With the draw, the Earthquakes extended their unbeaten streak to five games, tied for the longest active streak in MLS and tied for the longest streak by any Western Conference team this season. In the 12th minute, Quakes midfielder Shea Salinas played a give-and-go with Matias Perez Garcia inside Orlando City’s penalty area and ripped a shot towards net, but his attempt was corralled by keeper Tally Hall. Salinas created another scoring opportunity for himself in the 22nd minute. After receiving a through ball from forward Adam Jahn, Salinas stormed up the left side of the pitch and had a one-on-one with the keeper, but the narrow shooting angle proved too difficult as his left-footed shot went into the side netting. In the 51st minute, Orlando City went down when midfielder Brek Shea was sent off with a straight red after mistiming his tackle on Quakes midfielder Sanna Nyassi. Orlando City SC took a 1-0 lead in the 64th minute. After a penalty was called, Orlando City midfielder Kaka converted from the spot to give the away side the advantage.
